Congratulations Western New York!

I read on CNN Money yesterday that of the top 10 places to retire, three were in WNY - Buffalo, Rochester and Niagara Falls.

Oh boy. Like there aren't already enough old fogies cruising around in Crown Vics and Tauruses. Now you're going to have to deal with overcrowded Bingo halls, doctors' offices, hospitals and the like. And it'll get worse for the fashion-conscious since you already have to go to Toronto to buy clothing when the style is in it's first season. If there are any department stores left, they'll be full of "housecoats" and slippers, support hose, trusses and the like. Ugh.

Just kidding. WNY has always been a great place for kids and old folks. For everyong else in between it ain't much unless you like shoveling snow and paying horrendous taxes.

That said since I can buy a house in Buffalo for a median price of about what I'd pay for a toolshed here, I am gonna pick one up and stock it with Geritol against the day when I come back to wait out my last years on this sodding planet.

Heh - I know what you mean. I still own my house and a nifty piece of property in Elmira where I plan to retire. Life in CT is overpriced, overpopulated and overrated.

Meh. Not in the Quiet Corner.

There are about half a million reasons I can visit family in WNY, but I'd never want to stay for more than a week. Not least among these is that unlike the sulphur wells there, at least I can drink water from the tap here and take a shower w/o gagging.

You might want to suggest to your relatives that they invest in a wonderous new technology device called a water softener. :o

They are truly miraculous devices. :(

Fortunately Elmira doesn't have that problem. In fact, I would never dream of drinking tap water here in Stamford, but I do all the time in Elmira. And when you can't drink tap water there's always beer!

It's all perspective. My girlfriend lives in Manhattan and considers Greenwich to be 'the country'.

As long as you stay off I-95 it's still ok....but yeah, there are about 3x as many people here as when I moved to CT 30 years ago.

Water softeners are a pain in the ass. I had one when I lived in Webster and the damn thing ran over night, would wake me up. Course it was worse when the stupid well had an issue and no-one knew where all the pipes were. So what the heck, connecting to city water wasn't more than 8k and the water was ... well, probably full of toner from the Xerox plant but what the heck, the class action suit will take care of me in my old age.

To some this will explain it :P;) ... Even know we drink bottled water...

Not really... Just need to be up on it and diligent with maint.

I live in a town that doesn't get lake water... They pull it from wells in town (actually Lake Superior water table)... But the water is loaded with iron... I say loaded with clear water iron and very, VERY hard! Lots of sediment too...

I have been softening for about 10 years now since we built the house. The water straight out of the city/town line is about 10ppm!... I think iron in water starts showing the iron at .8!!!

It doesn't help that I am the, THEEE last line in town... Summertime (April-Nov) every Tuesday the water depart goes around and flushed hydrants... You don't want to do laundry!

I really need an auto iron filter that runs on K permanganate (KMnO4)... Actually, what I need to do is this:

Wish list, upgrade...

21" pre house element

KMnO4 auto iron machine

Softner (new one... Or rebuild the current machine)

21" post element

RO drinking water/frig icemaker

AND THIS FOR TOWN WATER!

NOW THE UPSIDE: my bills every 3 months are only 40 bucks or so... And they don't bother me with the sneaky little things I do with my storm/sump pump water...  If our village would get lake water, bills would soar to well over 100 a month! I am sure they would have the "sewer police" would dye my storm water...:angry:

Now those upgrades would shoot the sh*t out of those low water bills!:angry:

Or just drink bottled water and live with the water... Stock up with a lot of IronOut!

And do some old fashioned cleaning regularly!

:D

Wrong information. It was a CNNMoney.com article on retiring in the US. The list you're referring to are the top cities with affordable housing in the US. Has nothing to do with retiring there.

I'll Take Three Please
