The Senator
Those are really good articles, particularly the 'sleeping' one.....thanks for posting them! 778551[/snapback] My pleasure, and now back to your original topic - abstract lyrics that seem to make no sense... Call any vegetable Call it by name Call any vegetable Call one today Call any vegetable When you get off the train Call any vegetable And the chances are good Ooooh! The vegetable Will respond to you Call any vegetable Pick up your phone Think of a vegetable Lonely at home Call any vegetable And the chances are good That a vegetable will respond to you-hoooo RUTA-BAY-AY-AYGA RUTA-BAY-AY-AYGA RUTA-BAY-AY-AYGA RUTA-BAY-AY-AYGA RUTA-BAYYYYY . . . No one will know If you don't want to let 'em know No one will know 'Less it's you that might tell 'em so Call and they'll come to you Covered with dew Vegetables dream Of responding to you Standing there Shiny & proud by your side Holding your hand While the neighbors decide Why is a vegetable Something to hide? YAR-R-R-R-R-G-H!
Mikie2times
Great post, I've often thought the same thing, especially if those lyrics have some sort of meaning in my life. It's not my favorite genre by any means, but I think some here are looking at rap way to seriously. Most rappers don't make their songs intending to send you on some spiritual awakening. It's supposed to be fun, and not taken very seriously. The rappers who do take the lyrics seriously usually do a pretty good job at it.

BRH
Well hello Mr. Soul I dropped by to pick up a reason For the thought that I caught that my head is the event of the season Why in crowds just a trace of my face could seem so pleasin' I'd cop out to the change, but a stranger is puttin' the tease on I was down on a frown when a messenger brought me a letter I was raised by the praise of a fan who said I upset her Any girl in the world could have easily known me better She said "You're strange, but don't change" and I let her In a while will the smile on my face turn to plaster? Stick around while the clown who is sick does the trick of disaster For the race of my head and my face is moving much faster Is it strange I should change? I don't know, why don't you ask her? Is it strange I should change? I don't know, why don't you ask her? That's one of my all-time favorite NY songs. Now tell me what it means! Pete
words to live by- Life is too short so love the one you got cause you might get runover or you might get shot Never start no static I just get it off my chest Never had to battle with no bulletproof vest Take a small example A tip from me take all of your money and give it up to charity Lovin's what I got It's within my reach And the sublime style's still straight from long beach It all comes back to you you're gonna get what you deserve Try and test that you're bound to get served

BoondckCL
Sittin' in the mornin' sun I'll be sittin' when the evenin' come Watching the ships roll in And then I watch 'em roll away again, yeah I'm sittin' on the dock of the bay Watching the tide roll away Ooo, I'm just sittin' on the dock of the bay Wastin' time I left my home in Georgia Headed for the 'Frisco bay 'Cause I've had nothing to live for And look like nothin's gonna come my way So I'm just gonna sit on the dock of the bay Watching the tide roll away Ooo, I'm sittin' on the dock of the bay Wastin' time Look like nothing's gonna change Everything still remains the same I can't do what ten people tell me to do So I guess I'll remain the same, yes Sittin' here resting my bones And this loneliness won't leave me alone It's two thousand miles I roamed Just to make this dock my home Now, I'm just gonna sit at the dock of the bay Watching the tide roll away Oooo-wee, sittin' on the dock of the bay Wastin' time Just a song that puts you in the mood to kick back on a summer day and drink some booze, eat food, and just relax all your troubles away. It even works in the winter as well, as a way to remind yourself that it is not that always that cold at every point in your life and in a couple of months you will be able to feel your !@#$ing fingers and toes again. My vote: Genius
***PetrinoInAlbany***
Ever hear the story of "Yesterday" and it's original lyrics? McCartney claims the song came to him in a dream. So immediately he woke up and started playing it, but had no words for the vocal melody. So he went with - no joke ... "Ham and eggs... Baby, how I love your ham and eggs..." bbb
I have often said that there is not one song that makes sense the whole way through. Even the best of songs have some sort of throwaway line in there because it rhythmes - that I go huh? to That said, the best lyrical song of all time is Slit Skirts by Pete Townshend. /dev/null
Whenever I see a monitor go into "Powersave" mode I get this song in my head... Into the abyss Ill fall-the eye of horus Into the eyes of the night-watching me go Green is the cats eye that glows-in this temple Enter the risen osiris-risen again. Tell me why I had to be a powerslave I dont wanna die, Im a god, why cant I live on? When the life giver dies, all around is laid to waste. And in my last hour, Im a slave to the power of death. When I was living this lie-fear was my game People would worship and fall-drop to their knees So bring me the blood and red wine for the one to succeed me For he is a man and a god-and he will die too. Tell me why I had to be a powerslave I dont wanna die, Im a god, why cant I live on? When the life giver dies, all around is laid to waste. And in my last hour, Im a slave to the power of death. Now I am cold but a ghost lives in my veins, Silent the terror that reigned-maarbled in stone Shell of a man God preserved-a thousand ages But open the gates of my hell-i will strike from the grave. Tell me why I had to be a powerslave I dont wanna die, Im a god, why cant I live on? When the life giver dies, all around is laid to waste. And in my last hour, Im a slave to the power of death. oh, and btw...never question Bruce Dickinson!

BoondckCL
Thinking about my last post about Piano Man, i remembered a song that used to be one of my favorites but forgot all about it. Goodnight Saigon by Billy Joel is a well written song that captures the brotherhood of troops in war with the words of both Joel and retired Vietnam vets. bbb
LOL - However, I think that you may have actually come up with a winner in Saigon. I don't know of a line in there that doesn't make sense. And, that is a great song, too........Don't know if he still does it, but he would bring Viet vets up to sing the chorus of that in concert. justnzane
I hate myself, more than I ever let on. I'm burned out at 22. I lived too fast and I loved too much and I'll die too young, but I chose this cup that I drank from. Knew what I was getting into. But I couldn't let out what I had to keep in. I'm ashamed of myself and unspeakable sins, that I've committed and: [Chorus] I've made mistakes, but I'll find my way. There's no explanation for, the things I've failed at before. They can't hold my hand. It just hurts to be a man, Through the tortures of the damned. If I only had an axe, I'd sever the ties I've made with the world. Maybe I can be a stranger, in a strange place. If I start now, maybe I can be saved. If I only had a mask, I'd cover these bleeding eyes. They're bloodshot now but they'll be black by dawn. If I wake up now, I can be pure again. [Chorus] Look at me now, I'm on the tracks with my back towards the last train leaving town. [x4] [Chorus x2] yeah, this is some dark stuff but i love bayside (a modern punk band that prides themselves on meaningful lyrics).
