The Dean Posted September 12, 2006 Posted September 12, 2006 Sonny is one of the last living legends of the bop era. If you get a chance to see him live, be sure to do so...he won't live forever. Sonny's music is outstanding and his story is pretty good, too. I won't bore you with all the details. A synopsis is here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sonny_Rollins Like Miles, he has experimented and changed as he's aged. The constant is, his playing is always sweet and melodic...and BOLD. I think it's time for a little Sonny marathon.
The Dean Posted September 12, 2006 Author Posted September 12, 2006 For a limited time (a few more days left) you can view some video excerpts of Sonny here: http://www.sonnyrollins.com/birthday.php

Cugalabanza Posted September 12, 2006 Posted September 12, 2006 Wow, I actually have my Saxophone Colossus cd in my car right now. I didn't think there was another single human being who cared. Happy Birthday Sonny!

Speaking of legends of jazz, I'm psyched to see Ahmad Jamal play live @ Blues Alley in a few months. He'll be there from December 26 through the 31st. Hey, if any of you plan to come to Baltimore for the Ravens game, and would be intested in seeing the show, maybe we could make a group trip?
