Pros: Better than dialup if you can't get cable or (preferably) DSL

Cons: EXPENSIVE, high latency (meaning it doesn't work all that well with online games), not as fast as cable/DSL.

I'm assuming you're talking about DirecTV's DirecWay internet access? I don't think Dish network has internet, but I could be mistaken. I'm sure the pros/cons would be the same though.

Pros- blazingly fast download

- Available in rural areas

Cons- Succeptible to weather-related outages

- Uploads using a phone line

- High latency (lag) means it's not good for gaming

- expensive

IMO, you'd be better served to look into cable internet ot dsl if available

Actually, DirecTV has a two-way sattelite internet system now so you don't need the phone for uploading anymore.

Everything else is right on though.

I live in the sticks, There's no DSL just dial-up. I guess the next question is would you take directway over dial-up?

Thanks for the advice!

Possibly... But I think the hardware is VERY expensive -- $1,000 or so last time I heard. Monthly charges are roughly $100/month. That's a lot of money...

You might be better off looking at getting an ISDN line. They're generally much cheaper ($50/month). However, the speed is generally 128k (MAYBE up to 256k). Much better than dialup (since on dialup you generally don't get better than 28-36k), and much cheaper. But not blazingly fast.
