Fezmid
I thought this was a thread about the Star Wars DVDs... Now it's about peeing on A/V equipment....? And has been mentioned, the only thing cheaper than the DVD player in my setup is my power conditioner (aka: big fancy power strip). Granted if you've only spent $500 on your entire TV experience, then the HD-DVD player probably isn't for you. If, on the other hand, you've spent over $2,000 (which is a relatively low number), then it's a no-brainer IMHO. CW

TheMadCap
AJ will disagree, but Lucas is such a tool. His avarice knows no shame and no bounds. In the late 1990's the original negatives of the films were found to be in dreadful shape, so an emergency restoration was done to prevent the films from being lost forever. Unfortunately, to make his '97 reissues, he cut up the orginal negatives. So his claims that the original negatives no longer exist is true....from a certain point of view. It seems that legend tells that during this restoration, Georgie-boy had recalled most of the theatrical release prints of the films and DESTROYED them. Not wanting to be called a liar I guess. Nevertheless, original copies DO in fact exist, despite Pukus's best efforts. There are a few film archives around the world that have copies. And be serious here; do you REALLY think Lucas would be dumb enough to destroy every copy of the films that made him wealthy beyond the dreams of avarice? Me either. On the 2005 DVD release of the abominations, there is a featurette worth the price of the entire set, EMPIRE OF DREAMS. Notice that there is an opening crawl shown for the original 1977 film in anamorphic widescreen. So either a transfer of the film (or maybe just a clip) was done? Or maybe a version still exists? So we are left with two possiblities: One, that a copy of the film to be transferred to Blu-ray or HD-DVD does not exist (wrong). Or two, Lucas doesn't wish to release the film in highest quality.....yet. What I conclude is that one day, we will get yet another re-re-rerelease of the film on HD-DVD or Blu-ray. Of course, it will be with those other Star Wars "films" which I hope to never view again. Either way, Georgie-boy will not get another dime from me ever again. I'll just keep watching my 1993 LD DVD transfers, thanks. And If I ever meet Lucas in person, it would be worth going to jail just to kick that SOB in the ballz for how he is ripping us off. Yet again.

Yeah, we both feel differently about Lucas, but I certainly don't discount anything you said....a lot of people feel the way you do about him. I just can't bring myself to do that though, cause when I think about the impact he's had on my life I'm in awe of it. I mean, Star Wars was like the first great thing that I really remember....I was 5 y.o. when it came out, and I remember it clear as day. I remember getting the death star playstation at Christmas, all the other toys, the tv specials, the rest of the films, the books, etc, etc, etc. He's lke family to me I totally agree about Empire of Dreams.....WOW, what a great documentary. I need to watch that again soon, actually....great, great pice of work!

Sitting at Skywalker Ranch, hording his original copy of the OT, rubbing it seductively, saying "you want this, don't you" to all Star Wars fans. Past glories aside (for which I too, will always be grateful for) the guy has become a hack, and for that I cannot forgive him...

I certainly can understand it, I just can't allow myself to be seduced by the dark side I think what really solidified my feelings was the footage (I thnk it was actually on the Empire of Dreams documentary) where they talked about how Lucas had to fight so hard against the studios to get the first two films out. I just keep coming back to the idea that ultmately it's his baby, so he should be able to do wth it as he pleases, regardless of how I feel about it. That being said, if some idea that I created ended up becoming the phenomenon that the SW universe is today, I think I'd want to do what I could to appease those fans who were responsible for my success. But just becasue that's what I would do doesn't mean that's what someone else should do. I can see it both ways....I really can. I just feel that I've gotten the better end of the deal when it comes to Star Wars. It's a sacred thing to me....in some ways it has even helped define me as I've grown up. I've never spent money on a SW item/dvd/etc that didn't bring me a lot of enjoyment - again, dating all the way back to childhood. I guess I'm just a homer, or a SW geek, or whatever....but I just can't help it
