Setta as kickoff specialist

Recommended Posts

Waste of a roster spot.

Lindell's kickoffs are just fine.

Who else is starting to think keeping Setta might not be a bad thing to keep Lindell fresh and provide insurance against a Lindell/Moorman injury?

First, we can't afford the roster space. There are probably five players the coaches will want to keep on this team they are going to have to cut (not saying these are great players but very tough cuts at safety, WR, RB and LB).

Second we already have one roster spot for a ST specialist in Schenk.

And last, and most important, the kickoffs that Setta has been getting to the endzone are very low and not necessarily good strong long kicks.

I thought lindell was actually hitting the end zone last year on his kickoffs?  Maybe i'm wrong.  I do miss the days of steve christie, where he'd actually get some touchbacks on a regular basis.

Lindell was regularly getting them inside the 5 last season. This is yet another stroke of genius by someone looking to fix something that isn't broken.

While you're reminicing about Christie (those were some good times).... remember, tho, that the league has since moved the KOs 5 yards back (may have happened in Steve's latter days....) and reduced the size of the tee to 1 inch in an effort to increase the number of returns. With McGee, not a bad deal for us, I submit.

Also remember that April may not be trying to emphasize touchbacks for a reason. Whatever it is, STs are far from the biggest problem for the team.

Dude, good idea for the insurance but "keep Lindell fresh"?

Is his job that physically demanding that we need to build depth at that position?

I maintaint that he sucks and always will. There are some games where I'd just rather not have a kicker on the roster.

Everyone claims he's so "accurate" and whatnot. He's a solid kicker from 40 yards or less but it seems that besides this preseason he rarely is brought in to attempt any long kicks. (45 yards +)

And his look just doesn't sit right with me.

Lindell's kicks were very strong last year. Our coverage unit was amazing too, which sorta negates the necessity (sp? i'm too tired to look it up) to get touchbacks all the time. I was not suggesting that we have a kickoff specialist. Our team has too many holes to have one.

As for the history, i believe they moved the kickoff spot from the 35 to the 30 around 1991 or so. The tee size was decreased around 2000. I do recall that the tee reduction had a major effect on christie's kickoffs.

You have that backwards. The tee size was reduced in 1991 and the kickoffs were moved back around 2000.

To be fair to the new kickers, the kickers like Christie enjoyed when they

could kick from the 35 yard line rather than the 30 yard line, before the NFL

moved it back. Once they moved it back to the 30 yard line, even Christie

was very weak.

If you really believe that, you're a moron who is flying in the face of observable data.

Lindell is one of the better kickers in the NFL. You can feel unconfident in him over 40 if you want. But how you feel matters nil. He showed a lot last season when he got Shneck as his LS and was recovered from the shoulder injury that hurt his technique. Have you ever kicked a FG with an injured shoulder? Do you maintain that Drew Brees is a suck-ass QB b/c he didn't have a good season two years ago?

The premise of this thread sucks.

It's been said, but, I'll say it again...we have too many questions on the roster to take a spot with a kickoff specialist.  A good team can afford to do that, we can't.

Not even a good team can much afford that in today's NFL. Sacrificing a roster spot for this when it could be a LB, WR, OL is unacceptable for a team, and represents a lack of planning on the part of a GM's office.

We need to pee away depth so the ball can go 5-6 more yards farther on just a few plays per game? Especially when we have one of the best coverage units in the league.

Remember that scene in "stripes" when Bill Murray yells out, "STOOPID! STOOOOOPID!!!!" .... Yeah.
