New Onside Kick Rule

Recommended Posts

There's a new rule this year however, that doesn't allow the kicking team to completely load up on one side of the ball. In the past you could put all 10 players besides the kicker on one side of the formation. The new rule this year states that a team must have at least four players on either side of the ball on kickoffs.

thats gonna make it damn near impossible to get a recovery.

So it goes down their throat in the middle or, they load one winger up on the far right (ok, or left) and three guys stacked or side-by-side just to the right (ok, or left) of the kicker and the balance of the squad is lined up to the left (ok, or right) of the kicker.

Lindell kicks the friggin ball, the boys break out the brass knuckles and recover the friggin on-side kick.

What's so hard about that? The three guys on the right (ok, or left) of the kicker probably will have better angles to pop the snot out of some of the "hands" receivers the opponent de jour will have covering the kick. It's still a friggin' scrum and with the new "no whistle" rule, we'll probably get a few more recoveries.

Glad they're practicing this stuff. Hope they draw blood come gameday. If it were me, I'd put the biggest fattest linemen on the weakside of the kicker and angle them in toward the point of recovery. Mayhem baby, mayhem!

This is really too bad.  One of the few truly exciting plays left in pro ball--a game which has become less exciting--is now emaciated.

Yeah, Baseball want's its National Pastime trophy back. A possible subway series never hurts.

Football is getting boring to watch. This is why Espn, and other media outlets only talk about a few teams, namely Dallas, Miami, Oakland, and Green Bay. I watched the football show on Espn (or at least tried to watch) spend a good 10 minutes dedicated to Terrell Owens. This is the state of things we have to deal with. If the bills don't play, I can hardly stand to watch a game (the bills are hard to watch as well). Last year's Superbowl was tragic with the all the increasing commercialism and scripted penalty calls by the refs.

I'll wager 10 million dollars that if Dallas gets to the Superbowl, they'll win it no matter how much better the AFC team might be. It's already been decided by the networks.

Yeah - I brought this up last week when the list of rule changes was announced, but the article said it was on free kicks (after a safety, or going for a FG upon fielding a punt), but we decided that those were pretty rare circumstances and wouldn't have much impact.

Sounds like it DOES cover onsides kicks and that's a shame because now there's almost no way to get the ball back after scoring - it was low percentage to begin with - now it's even harder.

Well that just means the onside kicks will be kicked down the middle of the field than toward the sideline. That way you can still buch up as close to the kicker as possible but still have at least 4 guys on either side of him. In a sense it's like the onside kicks we used to see but now instead of the kicker being on the far right or far left of the 10 players he will be in the middle.

Well, if the kicking team has to have at least 4 players on either side of the kicker, then doesn't it stand to reason that the RECEIVING team would have to spread out similarly instead of loading up to the side with 10 men? ;)

There will still be about an equal number of players from each team fighting for the ball, and more room for each to recover it. Plus it reduces the risk of injury. Sounds good to me.

Which will also keep the ball from going out of bounds so much, I see a 10 on 10 scrum coming out of this. What will be interesting will be how the kickers modify their techniques to cope with the new rules. I don't think the traditional skip then big hop will work anymore as the ball will go 10 yards too fast, the kickers that can kick the ball straight down and get it to immediately pop up may have a terrific advantage though. If they can get it high enough you could outrun the ball and have the ball fall behind the kicking team after 10 yards. The receivers will still try to run up and field the ball rather than let it bounce if the kicker can bounce the ball high enough to get 1.5 seconds of hang time the guy who catches it will get slaughtered. The ball will really only have to go 10 yards as opposed to now where it really goes about 23 yards, give or take.

A new rule change like that is bound to confuse and perplex the unwary. Since we have a solid ST coach in April, I have a feeling our guys won't be perplexed or confused. In fact, I imagine April will find a way to take advantage of this rule in some way long before anyone else does. Advantage Buffalo.

It's not the networks who decide the winner man, it's the Tri-Lateral Commission!

The Grand Poobah will give another message tonight, set your decoder ring to D-6. That is all...

I was more worried that it may state:

If team recieving kick whilst with a player on team named, Ted Bruschi, must allow said Ted Bruschi to receive kick.

Kicking teak and receiving team must form a guard of honor down the field and allow Tedy to score a heroic comeback TD, one for the ages...

who thought of that?  and more importantly, why?  Was their actually anything wrong with the old rule?

It obviously favored The Bills.

The League had to change it to tilt the playing field in the opposition's favor.
