There are some people you tip and some you don't. It's that simple and it's not really for someone to make that decision, society has for you. Just go with the flow and stop complaining. Obviously waiters and waitresses, etc. rely on people tipping them so you tip them. Some other people you tip too.

Who's complaining? I tip a lot of people and tip them appropriately. If your service sucks, so will the tip. That doesn't happen too often however.

I tip guys that deliver furniture to the house and some other odd things. Sadly, guys like the mailman, and gladly the garbage men get overlooked. Although in my neigborhood the garbage men seem to think they are rulers of the land and they wont ever see a dime from me.

Wow, three years later? That's pretty cool. People appreciate it when you do stuff like that for them, so I don't have any problem taking part in tipping. Lord knows that there are enough incompetents out there that when you find someone good you might as well show them you value their service. My a/c went down a month or two ago....the guy they sent out here "fixed it", but then it died the next day. He came back out to change the motor the following day, but as he was installing it I heard a "poof"....followed by him mumbling, "uh oh, that's not good."  The guy finished the job and left, though it was clear to me that something was not right. I didn't want HIM to troubleshoot it though, so I let him leave and then called his supervisor about five mins after he left. They sent out a sr. tech the next day who installed yet another motor, and who was also candid enough to explain how the guy from yesterday screwed up. The company lost money on the job overall cause I obviously refused to pay for anything but the cost of a motor, but the second guy who came out did a great job at cleaning up the mess, so I had no problem tipping him.

I just want things done right. I want people to show up when they say they're going to be here and to do a competent job. If they do that, I don't mind tipping them. If not, screw 'em.

Would you tip your dealer, in Vegas, if you were winning?

Would you tip your dealer, in Vegas, if you were winning?

Never been to Vegas, but used to go to pre-hurricane Biloxi all the time.....and yep, I tipped the dealer all the time when I was winning at blackjack. I never really played to win big bucks, though....I just played long enough to get a few drinks in me, check out the pretty women, and make sure they had me on record enough so that we got all sorts of nice comp offers in the mail. But overall, yeah, I tip people in the entertainment industry too. I dunno, I just feel good about it. I guess if I'm being honest, tipping people is as much for me as it is for them. I feel good about having the disposable income that I have (which isn't a LOT, but it's there), so it serves a dual function. When I'm in a casino, I want to have a great time....so those who help facilitate that are worthy of tips, IMO

I was just in Louisville and had a poor dinner experience. I never complained once, but the waitress (I was sitting at the bar) recognized that my food took way too long and that my steak was not cooked to order.

When it was time for me to leave, she said that it was taken care of (including the 3 beers I drank). I would guess the total bill would have been about $35. I dropped a $10 spot on the bar and walked out. It was an ok meal, but not worth $35...definitely worth 10 though...

I tip waiters/waitress's, usually 20% unless it's really crappy service/food. Also I tip when I get my haircut, usually only $2. It's a buzz so it only takes them 10 minutes to do. Mailman and newspaper delivery get $50 from me at Christmas as a once a year tip. I did tip a towtruck operator when I needed a tow a couple weeks ago, $5 since he had to come out at 9pm at night. Valets, porters, carwash attendents, I don't like to tip, even though it's expected. Garbage men, never. They're making more than I am.

He then said, "I can come out the next day and get it done for you Mr. erynthered"

Some times it can pay dividends.

I can't believe you're using your real name on an internet message board.

The way I usually handle tipping for abnormal situations (i.e. not waiters, valets, curb checkers, etc.) is if they do something that makes you feel like you got a better than normal experience, then why not reward that? If you feel that the job they did exceeded your expectations, then go right ahead.

For example, if they were very polite and professional, helpful if you had any questions or problems, etc.

It's up to you to decide if you think the job they did deserves further compensation beyond what they are already making. There are no cookie-cutter rules for tipping...you wanna throw a guy a few extra bucks? Go for it...it will probably make his day.

Agreed - kind of like the poor guy who came out and trimmed all my trees in 104 degree heat. I tipped him extra.

For the most part, I'm a very good tipper. There's just one thing I hate tipping for: valet parking. I still throw them a couple bucks, but I hate doing it. I don't know why, but those smarmy little pricks just rub me the wrong way. I always avoid valet if I can help it. I guess I just resent having to let a stranger have the keys to my car. Plus, it's so unnecessary--why the hell can't I park my own car? It never struck me as an inconvenience.

Generous of you, I'm sure they will remember you...

Flooring installations is my buisness.....My crew and I have been tipped with cash, beer, food, and homemade maple syrup....

We Install professionally and are courteous while on the job....

If a customer asked us to move a piano or some other heavy piece of furniture that wasn't quoted in the contract, we will do it at no charge, just to get the job completed...

When a tip is offered, we go the extra mile with valuable info and advice on how to keep their carpet, stain and damage free with knowledgable info, besides vaccuming weekly...And will place an entrance mat at the main entry point and say thank you and take care man or babe :( Btw, a mat called water hog mat placed at enrty points will absorb oil and grime and sweep dirt and sand before you step on your rug, sold at home depot and flooring retailers..The mat is used in commercial buildings to help protect their flooring investments..

I'm with ya, man. I hate having ANYone drive my vehicle unless it's because I'm drunk (at which time I insist). Plus, with a valet there's the potential they leave you with "the beast."

Maybe. Although I hope you didn't get yours through Home Depot. I had a horrible experience with their installers.

My tipping pet peeve? So-called "Bathroom Attendants."

Are you kidding me? You want a tip for watching me piss and handing me a towel?

Biggest scam ever. I avoid those places like the plague.

Mr. Pink: I don't tip because society says I have to. All right, if someone deserves a tip, if they really put forth an effort, I'll give them something a little something extra. But this tipping automatically, it's for the birds. As far as I'm concerned, they're just doing their job.

Mr. Blue: Hey, our girl was nice.

Mr. Pink: She was okay. She wasn't anything special.

Mr. Blue: What's special? Take you in the back and suck your dick?

Nice Guy Eddie: I'd go over twelve percent for that.

And not only that but the burned rubber marks on the road at the edge of the driveway are from your car!

That was very nice of you. Frankly, I've never met a woman whose trees I'd trim in 104-degree heat.
