sdevo Posted August 5, 2006 Posted August 5, 2006 Well, besides the casino, has NF tried to do anything to develop their downtown? No doubt the City of N Falls has been its own worst enemy for many many years you would think having an attraction like the Falls would be an advantage. What it comes down to is that until employers that pay a good wage come back ie NYS becomes more attractive from a competitive standpoint WNY will continue on this path
SilverNRed Posted August 5, 2006 Posted August 5, 2006 Hey Genius - Las Vegas is one of the fastest growing cities in the country. Google it. 736062 Buffalo is NOT Las Vegas.
Marv's Neighbor Posted August 5, 2006 Posted August 5, 2006 Have you been in the area where they wanted to build the casino? What small businesses are down there? Except for the Perry projects and surface parking lots for the arena, there has been nothing there for 20 years or more. 735134 The Perry projects have: drugs, numbers and prostitution. How many "small businesses" could you want?
Catholic Guilt Posted August 5, 2006 Posted August 5, 2006 Buffalo is NOT Las Vegas. 736203 Correct. It was just a small desert town back in the 40s when Buffalo was considered a big city. Good example of how gambling can bring in the money and jobs. And I'm speaking from experience. My uncles have lived in Vegas since the 60s.

drnykterstein Posted August 5, 2006 Posted August 5, 2006 I can't wait to hear the explanation behind this. 736069 Twas a question. Noe the question mark, which signifies it was a question. LV can't get a pro-sports team. Not enough money, because of competing gambling entertainment. Not enough people because of 24hr work/life schedule. Not enough interest because of bookie/sports betting fears. Buffalo is very close at all times to losing both of those teams. Add to our current state a casino and that might be the straw that broke the camels back. Anyways, it was a thought, suggestion, and question. Not a statement of truth in any fashion. But I would bring it in as a possible concern.

Add to our current state a casino and that might be the straw that broke the camels back. 736363 Well, now there's a big leap. If the casino is successful, like Vegas, a ton of people will move in and the sports teams will move? That's REALLY lahjikal. Anyways, it was a thought, suggestion, and question. Not a statement of truth in any fashion. But I would bring it in as a possible concern. While I don't think a casino is a good idea for the region (anything brought to you by Buffalo politicians should be questioned HIGHLY), the sport's teams health won't be tied to it in any way. If/when they move, it'll be because the region has been dying for a long time and the apathy from the politicos and their supporters will be the reason.
drnykterstein Posted August 5, 2006 Posted August 5, 2006 Correct. It was just a small desert town back in the 40s when Buffalo was considered a big city. Good example of how gambling can bring in the money and jobs. mafia and crime lords Anyways, I'm not concerned with Buffalo's lack of money besides holding onto the Bills. I make a good living and many others do also. For now its a SAFE town, which is close knit and FRIENDLY. Buffalo has a CHARM which people like. Its a great place to raise a FAMILY, even if it does not fit the college graduate lifestyle. However much I leave, I always plan on returning to raise my KIDS. ... that is unless they start bringing in the casino's.
drnykterstein Posted August 5, 2006 Posted August 5, 2006 long time and the apathy from the politicos and their supporters will be the reason. I know. So sad.

Why always try and duplicate what others do?... Doesn't American history tell you that things usually work out for the one's that get in on new ideas... Not the one's that follow suit... The one's who can skirt the issues, exploit a niche and defect from the norm usually end up ahead... Buffalo... Are you listening?

Defect from the norm! Make Buffalo Biosphere B!

All you have to do is look at the city school system and you would know that it is NOT a great place to raise kids. Even without kids, there are only a few areas of the city worth living in. The rest are a joke.
Catholic Guilt Posted August 6, 2006 Posted August 6, 2006 Screw the casino. With all the businesses wanting to move to Buffalo, they need to take a back seat.
yall Posted August 7, 2006 Posted August 7, 2006 Start an exciting career as a blackjack dealer...bathroom janitor...table busser...or hotel maid. Earn as much as $6 an hour plus tips! Of course you can always shove your paycheck into a slot machine on your way out. PTR 735995 Of course, you actually can't. the Senecas do not allow their employees to gamble where they work. They would have to hoof it up to the falls if they wanted to gamble. I too think a Buffalo casino is a bad idea, in that it will do nothing to help the city. But then again the city and the county, by way of those of us who live here, do nothing to help ourselves. Living here is like being in a Red Stripe commercial... "Boo demanding more from your public servants... Hooray apathy!"
Live&DieBillsFootball Posted August 8, 2006 Posted August 8, 2006 There is a lawsuit going on seeking to clarify whether it is even legal for the Seneca's to open a casino that is not located on reservation land. The 2 former Congressional sponsors of the Seneca Nation Settlement Act, John Lafalce and Amo Houghton, have both stated that the act was never intended to permit off-reservation venues for casion gambling! You can read more on the Citizens for a Better Buffalo web site: Link If the judge rules against the Seneca's, Niagara Falls will be looking for a much larger piece of the action on the Seneca Niagara Casino. It will be very interesting to see how this plays out.
