LabattBlue
This city continues to be unable to get out of it's own way.... The casino project is in jeopardy, because the city won't sell some piece of s-h-i-t land that has been vacant forever to the Senecas. Why...because the Senecas won't promise that 1/2 of the employees will be city residents and 1/3 minorities or women. So instead, we get some half a$$ building with a 100 slot machines. F*** the city of Buffalo politicians. I'll never believe a single word that comes out of their mouths. http://www.buffalonews.com/editorial/20060803/1024673.asp
mtdoak
good. this city has done enough damage to itself, it doesn't need a casino to help. 735073 Ding. I'm all for Casinos in Atlantic City, Vegas, and on various indian casinos. What small businesses are down there? Except for the Perry projects and surface parking lots for the arena, there has been nothing there for 20 years or more. SilverNRed
good. this city has done enough damage to itself, it doesn't need a casino to help. 735073 We're still getting a casino. It's just now we're getting a half-assed casino. All because Byron thought he'd extort a little extra from the Senecas, the only people doing anything downtown, when they tried to buy a street that the city has done nothing with for the past 50 years. Nice job, retard.
apuszczalowski
With it being an Indian (sorry Native American Casino) would it have really helped out the city much? It will be run by their own people and doesn't alot of the money go back to them? I'm not sure how this deal works and how those casino are run. SilverNRed
i'm not sure how anyone with half a brain think this will help buffalo economically. 735470 It pretty much won't. Same with Bass Pro - they've built one of those in every city near Buffalo in the time since they first announced that ideal. But if they're letting the casino happen, why let it get this far along and then cut the Senecas down at the knees? Of course, nothing else is happening in Buffalo. If not for the Senecas, we'd have the H O Oats grain elevator standing there for another 100 years. The only reasonably good thing happening in Buffalo is they're starting to convert some buildings to apartments so that we'll have more people living downtown, and therefore spending downtown. Buffalo could really take advantage of all the waterfront property and build apartment buildings everywhere. Nothing will ever get done in Buffalo. The people vote for stupid politicians who come up with bad plans and then don't even allow them to work.
Catholic Guilt
i'm not sure how anyone with half a brain think this will help buffalo economically. brown doesn't need a brain because he gets money. ... i still don't get why the 20 minute drive to niagara falls is too much for some people. ... also if a casino gets built, i'm taking me and my nationally based income and leaving. i don't have to live here. i choose to. 735470 Half a brain? Help ecomonmically? You gotta be kidding. Look no father than the town of Salamanca, sixty miles south of Buffalo. After the casino was built it brought jobs and money to the town. The Buffalo News ran an article called "Casino brings prosperity back to Salamanca" last month. Property values are up, population is increasing and business are looking to open nearby. The city of Buffalo doesn't like change and it will continue to die a slow death like the dinosaurs if they continue to be short-sighted.
beerme1
... also if a casino gets built, i'm taking me and my nationally based income and leaving. i don't have to live here. i choose to. 735470 I'm not sure I understand you. I choose to live here also because despite the three and four alarm fires every night and being on par with Ontario in the fact that we are the highest taxed people in the nation, the complete lack of leadership through the past, present and likely future, the decent winter weather and total lack of jobs, prosperity and development, it is the nicest place anyone could live! I'm not leaving. I don't really care what they do with casino. If I had my way it would be the place they chose in Cheetowaga. It was out of the way, wouldn't upset anybody etc. but you know how that goes around here. And really, if you want a nice casino experience you are going to Fallsview. At least there it seems more upscale and you get something for giving up your money. At the Seneca Casino I feel like I may as well just give them $150 or so at the door and leave. I will give you another example, the Bears Den in Seneca Casino is an awesome small venue for concerts. It holds something like 500 people. They ruined it by going cheap on the sound set up. It blows. And in keeping with the money grubbing, when they get big names that draw more people, they open up their 4 room banquet area. A complete joke to see a concert at. Conversely at Fallsview, they have a properly built concert venue that probably seats around 2500 and is still a small venue that is very cool to see a concert at. And the big thing, your ear's don't bleed because they spent some money and put in top shelf sound equipment. I don't know why I'm rambling on about this other than I have a lot of disdain for the Seneca's anyway. Their not even very good Indians. Indians elsewhere think poorly of them! But really what does it matter to you? So I guess I still want to know why the hell would you leave, if you don't have to?

You have to ask the question why do we think a casino is supposed to "save" Buffalo (it won't). The real shame is the lack of creativity to bring real business and opportunity to Buffalo. Of course, having ignorance in Albany (thanks Pataki, Silver) and outsourced jobs resulting for a lower standard of living for everyone doesn't help. John from Riverside
I dont know how it is in your area but Soboba Casino is LITERALLY the only place to work that is in proximity of Hemet except for citi jobs (gotta know somebody) or school district jobs (gotta know somebody) I have been attempting to get a job closer to home so I dont have to commute with the city and schools for TWO PLUS YEARS and still dont have one.... My wife actually has a great job as a dealer at the Indian Casino....

Both Niagara Falls and Buffalo remind me of obese people who exercise once or twice a year and wonder why they aren't getting thin. They do a little here and there to make progress but not nearly enough to make any difference. Certainly not as much as "healthy" cities.
ExiledInIllinois
What do you do with a city like Buffalo?... It is so FUBARed beyond belief! Kinda like a returning vet that gets the shaft coming home... A city that played such a important patriotic role during the two WWars and more... There is a lot to blame in its demise and it can be spread all around... The question is... Is it "owed" something for being a "good soldier" and soley a "worker" town? I can ask a zillion crazy questions if you want...

The mentality on the face appears to be that. Buffalo is a hardworking city but they get caught up in their own self pity... There is just no base... What does Buffalo bring to the national table? Debt collection? And anything else... They simply eat their "young." Then again, I should talk... I left.

mcjeff215
OR sit around, collect unemployment and B word about the good old days with the steel mills... 736064 God that's got to go. WIth the exception of a few, my entire extended family still lives up there. It seems that every time I go up there they sit around telling me how good I have it in GA and that the economy is so bad. It turns into a "we need to vote Democrat so they take care of us small-town workers" conversation. The ironic part? A few of them are Erie County employees. In the same sentence, they'll complain about the high taxes and economic situation and then vocally fear for their jobs and pensions. -Jeff
