jkx2 Posted August 22, 2004 Posted August 22, 2004 My dad just heard on the news that long time Buffalo sports caster Clip Smith was killed in a car accident tonight.
stuckincincy Posted August 22, 2004 Posted August 22, 2004 I sure hope not. He started announcing back when I lived in Buffalo.
Campy Posted August 22, 2004 Posted August 22, 2004 That's sad. He was a piece of work. (NB: I mean that as a compliment)
millbank Posted August 22, 2004 Posted August 22, 2004 a very unique person in Buffalo media, very sad
JohninMinn. Posted August 22, 2004 Posted August 22, 2004 Seems like only yesterday I was watching Clipley's Believe it or Not
rastabillz Posted August 22, 2004 Posted August 22, 2004 Terrible news. His quips were so bad they were funny. Wasn't he mayor of Lockport at one time?
Fan in San Diego Posted August 22, 2004 Posted August 22, 2004 Clipley's Believe it or Not was a classic. Prayers for him and his family !
Mark VI Posted August 22, 2004 Posted August 22, 2004 Led off the 11pm news on all 3 channels last night. What a shame. A unique personality in Buffalo sports. The king of bad puns, which made him popular for 3 decades. A great sense of humor. Must have done a thousand local commercials. RIP Clip.

TigerJ Posted August 22, 2004 Posted August 22, 2004 Yeah, that's sad. Makes me realize how lucky I am. About 10-12 years ago I was in a car accident with a minivan, In that case it was the minivan that ran the stop sign. She hit the driver's side.My car was totaled, and I was in shock, and bruised up and down my whole left side, but I was still able to walk away from it.
coloradobillsfan Posted August 22, 2004 Posted August 22, 2004 my memories of clip smith go back well into my childhood. this is sad news, and my sincerest condolensces go to his family and friends.
BRH Posted August 22, 2004 Posted August 22, 2004 Does anyone know whether he was coming from or going to his reunion (see obit)? In any case, sad news. Glad the people in the minivan weren't hurt badly, though.
SilverNRed Posted August 22, 2004 Posted August 22, 2004 Back when HSBC Arena had first opened (and was still called Marine Midland Arena) they had Clipper take the mic during the intermission of one of the first preseason games they ever played there. His words, to paraphrase: "This is a beautiful new arena. I understand they're planning on adding a bakery soon....because there are going to be a lot of calls for icing." I always thought it was funny that anyone would tell jokes that bad in front of thousands. RIP, Clipper.
