\GoBillsInDallas/
Anyone following this? The governor signed the "shutdown" order on Saturday, which furloughed all state employees except for "essential personnel" (ex. state police) and stopped state spending (no paychecks to state employees, no roadway construction, etc.). The "cliff notes" version is as follows. - New Jersey is required to have a balanced budget in place by the start of the fiscal year (July 1st). - The budget is not balanced: About $4 billion short on a $35 billion budget. - Governor (democrat) wants to raise state sales tax from 6% to 7% to increase revenues. - State Senate and Assembly (both democrat majority) both reject this sales tax increase. - State Senate and Assembly each have their own plans to balance budget (cutting spending and raising other taxes). Senate and Assembly cannot agree on each other's plans, so neither plan ever makes it off the floor to a vote. - Because of impasse, Governor shuts down state government. - Because State Casino Commission oversees casinos, the Atlantic City casinos may have to shut down as well. KD in CA
- Because State Casino Commission oversees casinos, the Atlantic City casinos may have to shut down as well. Or the NJ Senate will have to rush through a bill to reclassify the State Gaming Board as "essential employees". I was in AC over the weekend and stayed in Ventor last night. From the people we talked to it looks like they are making slow progress in turning the city around.
Alaska Darin
Good. I hope they can't reach an agreement and it stays shut down for a long time. Maybe then some real concessions will be made and they'll actually cut the budget significantly. Yeah. Right.

IBTG81
This state is so corrupt it makes California look like it run by a bunch of Mother Theresa's. Our property taxes here: If you own a 600,000 home (the norm pretty much around here) your taxes are 1,000 A MONTH The cost of living is insane, and now they just want to keep raising taxes. This tends to happen when the voters vote in the same schlubs OVER AND OVER again.

Pine Barrens Mafia
LOL Budget's got a shortfall! What's the answer? MORE TAXES! If people ran their everyday finances like that, EVERYONE would be bankrupt.
KRC
Gotta love when the Democratic governor and the Democrat-led legislature cannot agree on how to eff the citizens properly. "Gee, how should we raise taxes to pay for our 10% increase in spending? Can't find a solution? No problem. We will just shut down the government so that we lose millions of dollars in revenue every day until we get off out azzes and solve how to eff the citizens of NJ." NJ: you get what you deserve by electing these yahoos.

Codey is a lifelong Democrat, but I must say, he was doing a great job. So, what happens? Because he's not a good old boy and started clearing out some of the corrupt people, they give the nomination to Corzine instead. I never thought I'd say this, but I hope Trump runs for Governor, wins, and clears out all of the crap. It could be a reality show. "The Governor" airing on NBC. It's nearly impossible for reformers to make headway in local elections. Welcome to Louisiana of the north. IDBillzFan
It's really a shame that a tiny little pissant state like NJ has to let their Democratic leaders once again embarrass themselves by thinking more of themselves and not of the people who elected them. On the other hand, the folks of NJ got what they elected, so I suspect they'll have to live with the ignorance.
