Lurker Posted July 1, 2006 Posted July 1, 2006 John Davidson must've really liked watching him during the payoffs (I mean playoffs): Good luck, Jay....
BuffOrange Posted July 1, 2006 Posted July 1, 2006 Davidson is the Blues GM now? Sad to see him go but no need to overpay w/ they have i guess. Also, the Bruins payed Chara a lot, which is bizzare; don't they need lots of help?
BillsGuyInMalta Posted July 2, 2006 Posted July 2, 2006 Also, the Bruins payed Chara a lot, which is bizzare; don't they need lots of help? 717318 Everyone is overpaying like crazy, but hey...good news for the Sabres if these teams are only going to manage to throw one all-star line at them each game...and then 3 crappy ones. Sabres will run right over those type of teams next season, just as they did this year. And as for Jay McKee, clearly it was about the money. Cant blame him for it, the guy has earned a good paycheck. Ah well though, I'm sure he'll put up with being on a crappy team for a few more zeroes on his paycheck.
GhostsOfTheRockpile Posted July 2, 2006 Posted July 2, 2006 By the end of free agency, Darcy is going to again show why he's one of the top three GM's in the game. McKee at $4 million per? I love the guy, but HA! What a waste of money for a blue-liner with limited offensive abilities. Chara at $7.5 million per? For a guy who's an annual playoff ghost? HA! The Bruins need so much help elsewhere, its scary. Putting 15-17% of your cap number into one guy is ludicrous, especially one who's afraid of the biggest stage. Luongo, Jovanovski and Blake in the $6-$7 million range is also pathetic. When are these GM's going to learn? You're better off getting two stellar players at $3.5 per year and building quality depth, multiple lines, etc. than you are paying for a "splash" free agent. Morons. All of them. Rock 'em Darcy. Can't wait to see who he picks as this year's Toni and Teppo, or the next Gratton-for-Briere swap (fleecing?).

And he only blocked more shots then any d-man in the NHL. Would you rather have a d-man who scores 3 and saves 25 goals or a d-man who cannot play d, scores 10 and allows 5 more? Pick your posion.
shrader Posted July 2, 2006 Posted July 2, 2006 McKee would have cost less if the Sabres showed him respect.717344 Respect or not, the Sabres would've never been willing to give him more than 2.5 a year. McKee would never walk away from the extra 1.5 million. He'd have to be crazy to.

If they put it out there in public that they are going to offer him much less than anyone else, they look cheap and/or disrespectful. It was clear that McKee would get a better offer from another team so if you're Darcy you keep your mouth shut and let him walk.
Alaska Darin Posted July 2, 2006 Posted July 2, 2006 McKee would have cost less if the Sabres showed him respect. Gee, thanks. You his agent? I believe nothing I read in the press because it's mostly bull sh--. I have zero doubt in my mind that McKee wanted to test the waters because this was his single chance to get paid. And he only blocked more shots then any d-man in the NHL. Would you rather have a d-man who scores 3 and saves 25 goals or a d-man who cannot play d, scores 10 and allows 5 more? I wish him luck because he played his ass off here, but he's nowhere near irreplaceable.

Really, that's half what Chara got. i hope they at least made the guy a real offer, he deserves it, and that kind of disrespect gets around. I didn't have any great hope of resigning McKee anyway, I think he's had his mind made up about this since he got screwed by Darcy(yes, I know it was the old owner's fault) a couple years ago.

Assuming you ONLY had to count 24 players in your salary cap, each one would average out to about 4% of the salary cap if everyone made the same amount of money. Oh, and yeah, McKee just signed a paycheck worth almost a million more than Drury. I'd say its damn good money for him.
NorCal Aaron Posted July 2, 2006 Posted July 2, 2006 According to ESPN http://sports.espn.go.com/nhl/news/story?id=2505711, McK signed a 9yr/16 Million $ deal. 1.7 a year - that's all?

LOUIS -- Veteran defenseman Jay McKee agreed to terms on a four-year, $16 million contract with the St. Louis Blues on Saturday. http://sports.espn.go.com/nhl/news/story?id=2507158 And... http://www.nhl.com/news/2006/07/276408.html It's 4 Million per year.
Dante Posted July 2, 2006 Posted July 2, 2006 When I heard that Mckee was going to be available I really hoped the Sharks would make a move for him. Not sure about 4million per year though.

I'd put Tallinder and Lydman ahead of him. Kalinin could be ahead of him if he can stay healthy (a problem McKee himself had until last season) and maybe Campbell for what he brings in the new NHL. We can lose all our UFAs and still have a very successful off-season if we get 3 and 4 year deals done with our core players (Tallinder, Briere, Roy, Connolly, etc.)

If those two can be retained, I say do it. My worry about the McKee contract doesn't really stem from dealing with McKee outright -- I think he's a great guy and a selfless player on the ice and I wish he could stick around. But, no way can we pay him that kind of money under the current cap situation and the team's financial situation. The big worry is if this is the kind of money guys like Jay are getting, are we ever going to be in a position to retain our young stars? Or will we indeed be like the A's -- grooming a lot of great young players who will inevitably end up elsewhere, putting the squeeze on our system to continually produce them?

Every player as good or better than Jay McKee can't make $4M dollars because of the salary cap. I think there are a lot of strange contracts being given out now because 1. GMs are still feeling their way around the new system and 2. a lot of NHL GMs are pretty stupid. HOPEFULLY, things start to even out once teams start legitimately having cap trouble in the next couple years (I don't think anyone is dealing with that right now). And in the A's defense, they're in first place right now. Meanwhile, the big spending Angels are hanging out in last place and leading the AL in errors. Nice team.
