I got mine in April

No bike yet, and although I'm really itching, just not sure................

My sister is a parapalegic. When she was in rehab, about 1/3 of her fellow patients had broken their backs in motorcycle accidents, another 1/3 from diving into shallow water.

Yeah...but I was being serious.  Avenger wants to argue that bike helmets save money?  He's wrong...it's a lot more cost-effective to let people kill themselves quickly.  The "You're wasting my money by not wearing a helmet" argument is bull sh--...

Though not quite as much as the "You're hurting other people when you make them scrape your brains off the pavement."  What, helmets should be required because if a rider dies, it shouldn't gross out anyone else?

I guess it comes down to statistics. How many helmetless riders actually die on the scene vs. die later avfter the MediVac comes to pick you up? Then how many of those could have been avoided with a helmet? and vice versa...

The answer isn't apparent to me unless you know of a study that has been done on the subject.

Regardless, if you don't wear a helmet - then, IMHO, you are telling people to let you die on the street if you crash.

FoxSports is saying serious condition.

http://msn.foxsports.com/nfl/story/5687558?GT1=8297

"Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger was badly injured in a motorcycle crash Monday morning and set for surgery.

Roethlisberger was in serious but stable condition in an operating room, said Dr. Larry Jones, chief of trauma at Mercy Hospital. Jones spoke before going into surgery."

Please be warned....my sister works at the DMV in Buffalo....guess who came in and got a motorcycle liscence in March?

A clue:  it wasn't Kelly Holcomb, Craig Nall, Kliff Kingsbury, Troy Ochs or Marv Levy!

Are you saying that Ralph Wilson is going to be courting free agents and potential coaching personel by escorting them around Buffalo on his Hog instead of his Taurus?

prediction: roethlisberger will be the starting qb for the steelers in game 1 of the 2006 nfl season.

Prediction: He never plays again.

Don't worry, I don't think I've ever been right on a prediction.

And think of the per diem their family has saved on the cost of food alone.

That adds up.

Just think about all the people with sponges and squeegies who would be out of work if people were forced to wear helmets. Who is looking out for them!?!

Prediction #2: He WILL be wearing a helmet that day.

No way.  Try driving on the Belt Parkway here in NYC, during the summer.  Massive traffic, crawling along at 20 MPH, here comes some yahoos on bikes weaving in between the three lanes choke full of traffic.  And they wonder "why" when they get wasted by a car changing lanes.

You want to talk about killing a whole day while some yahoo is scraped off the Belt, after trying to make it between an Expedition and a Land Rover full of kids, and you're sitting there for 3 hours.  Fun.

And I've sat for three hours in traffic after some irresponsible moron in a Land Rover tried to cut across four lanes of rush hour traffic without checking over his shoulder to make his exit. The problem isn't morons in cars, or morons on bikes. The problem, simply, is !@#$ing morons in general.

Plus...bikers wearing helmets isn't going to solve your problem of sitting in traffic at accident scenes. Helmets don't prevent accidents. Once the helmet actually becomes of any use, the accident's pretty much already happened...

I hope he turns out to be alright. I'd never ride a motorcycle out here in the Bay Area without a helmet (it is a law). Everyone I know that has a motorcycle out here has crashed and/or been hit. Terrible drivers in this area.

General observations from local news that I've seen:

Massive indentation in windsheild from his head lower passenger side of windshield just above corner post and hood ,,,,crumpled passenger fender and broken side window,,,,,, witness said he hit windshield and flew over the car landing again on his head at rear of car was semi alert and said his name was ben and asked what city he was in,,,,,witness said he tried to get up but was told to stay down ,,,, wreck happened at the tenth st. bridge underpass area judging by time of day and light conditions there were lots of shadows ect. ect. ..........car was driven buy woman with Maine plates and may have been unfamilar with area .....this does not look good for big ben.......he was riding a crotch rocket not the harley..........I travel alot and this is the hardest city to navigate in the U.S. in my opin..........if she was unfamilar with area this would be very easy to do........it looked to me as though his head didn't go completly through windshield because it hit the dashboard ...............just relating what I've seen on local news and radio coverage..........

A quick death is usually cheaper than a severe spinal injury and all the medical staff, rehabilatative staff, etc.

So yes, I think it is hard to argue from cost/benefit standpoint. Although the last time (and I mean the last time) I was on a bike, the helmet saved my life. I did a movie stunt fall -front fender, hood, windsheild, over the roof and rolled over and off the back.

A drunk driver.

The Burgh is very tough, but nothing beats Boston.

Larry M. Jones, Chief of Trauma & Burn Unit at Mercy Hospital, said Roethlisberger is in serious but stable condition. He is currently in the operating room undergoing surgery for injuries received in the accident.

Jones said Roethlisberger was coherent and talked to the doctors before the operation.

A source close to the Steelers organization said Roethlisberger suffered injuries to the face and head, but would not disclose details.

Thus demonstrating that it's very EASY to argue from a life/death standpoint. Which is fine...perfectly legitimate argument. "Cost effectiveness", however, is NOT.

My father's neighbor actually got on Rescue 911 for his accident. 20 years experience riding, locked up on gravel, flew into a ravine, snapped a 6-inch sapling in half with his leg, left most of his calf in another tree. What saved his life was...his leather riding gear, actually. Aside from where his leg intersected the tree, he didn't have a mark on him...but his medical bills were insane nonetheless. He's still in physical therapy 10 years later.

Another guy...managed to decapitate himself on a stop sign (tough to do, road signs aren't exactly sharp). His medical bills were dirt cheap.

Speaking of idiot drivers, I continue to be amazed by people who no longer STOP at a STOP sign. It ranges from people who do a rolling stop to people who act like there isn't even a stop sign in place. A$$holes!!:lol:
