Guffalo
Is it tacky to have a father as a best man? Does it happen often? 703618 It's your choice, is he the best man? If he is, in your eyes, then so be it.... (Damn, I really wanted to bust chops and comment on how you pissed off every other guy you know)

Part of the problem is, I don't know who to choose. I don't want to insult anybody. Second, my dad and I are close. I thought it would be a touching way to honor him. Paul made me think. We don't have forever on this earth.
Crap Throwing Monkey
Is it tacky to have a father as a best man? Does it happen often? 703618 I'm surprised he'd agree with it, given the gayness of his son's new car... (It's non-traditional, for sure...but I don't think it's strictly verboten. Traditionally, the parents have seats of honor in the front of the ceremony, which having dad as a best man kind of screws with - but it's just tradition, not an inviolable rule. If that's what you want, do it...)

drnykterstein
Yeah go for it if you want. Its you're wedding. You have no one to please except your self. I've seen both fathers and mothers be bestmen/maid 'o honors.
apuszczalowski
Yeah go for it if you want. Its you're wedding. Make the offer if thats what you want, the worst that can happen is he tells you hes touched but feels its not his place to be best man, or the worst thing is you have your dad to watch porn and hang out with at a strip club With the way modern weddings are going, nothing is tradition anymore so making a change like this isn't really going to be anything huge

rastabillz
Here in NC it is not uncommon for the father to be best man, so go for it if you want. I'm sure your dad would be honored, bit don't count on any hot strippers for the stag party then!
Beerball
Would your father be honored? Would you be honored? If yes, do it.
KD in CA
Is it tacky to have a father as a best man? Does it happen often? 703618 Of course not. If he's the person you are closest with, it's entirely appropriate. I'm sure he'd be honored.
X. Benedict
Is it tacky to have a father as a best man? Does it happen often? 703618 Not tacky, and it does happen all the time. This is a hetero wedding, right?
plenzmd1
Is it tacky to have a father as a best man? Does it happen often? 703618 Happening quite frequently now. Read an article that postulated that as a country we are getting older when we are first married, and as we tend to become closer to our parents in our mid thirties than our early twentys,we realize what our parents have meant to us, and so more men are choosing to have their ftahers as their bast man. I think its awesome BTW
VABills
What the hell, make it an all male wedding.
Stussy109
Well its a bit out of the norm, because normally the father plays a big role in the wedding already as "Father of the Groom." It'd be difficult for him to play both roles as best man etc. Also do you wnat your father planning the bachelor party etc which is a role usually put on by the best man. The norm is a brother or best friend.

Talk about a silly tradition that doesn't mean anything. His friends can arrange the night at Chippendales just fine.

Not too hard to eat, drink, and be merry on the poor Father of the Bride's dime. Other than monetary involvement, I'd be interested to hear what some other fathers have done to play a part in their son's wedding. Anyone?
