PFW 2006 Preview Issue

Does ANYONE realize that Holcomb basically won TWO games last year, that the Bungles game was won pretty much by McGee alone, and that the Jets game is something that SHOULD have put the final nail in the "Holcomb for starter coffin?"

That is completely unfair. Of course McGee was the MVP of that Bengals game, but Holcomb had 300 yards - none of which were garbage time - and engineered two key scoring drives in the 4th Qtr. Lets not revise history because you're in the JP fanclub.

Then follow suit and let's not forget the whale of a game Holcomb had against the Jets, especially those pinpoint passes to Ty Law.

Follow suit with what? I'm not a big KH fan and I'd rather see JP play next year. I just wish JP apologists would stick with the "he was a rookie" point and leave it at that - don't pretend like Holcomb wasn't the much better QB last year.

I would buy this if they made more of a concentrated effort this off-season to set JP up for success. If it was determined that this is going to be a rebuilding year anyways, I would've let the defense continue to be a sieve (which it may still end up being) and first dedicated a lot more resources (ie. draft & FA's) to the offense (particularly the OL) to help my young franchise QB develop. I think these off-season actions indicate that DJ & Marv don't really care who ends up winning the QB position, it's not a high priority for JP to be the winner... if none of these 3 are the answer, they'll look elsewhere next year.

I think they have built the team for JP's purposes. As was pointed out by others, they brought in FAST WRs (ones that are designed for the long ball not KH's short game), re-enforced the OL with Reyes and Fowler and improved the defense so that it's better able to recover from a young QB's inevitable mistakes. Not to mention the offensive system they are employing is better suited to JP's arm strength and talents than KH's.

Regardless, tossing JP away after only 8 games would be a disasterous setback from an organizational standpoint, everyone at OBD knows this, hence why I believe there is no way JP is NOT the starter on openning day UNLESS he is a mess in camp/preseason and is injured. If KH outplays JP by a hair, JP starts. If KH and JP play to a draw, JP starts. If KH throws 10 more TDs and 10 less INTs in preseason than JP, then he might get the nod. But the likelyhood of that hapenning is slim to none.

A "much better QB" would have led the Bills to more than 1 win over a guy who was slightly above a rookie. I have nothing against KH as a person, he's just NOT a starter.

[J.P.'s] odd personality & thin skin don't lead to a leadership role... previous staff lost confidence in him

Where does this stuff keep coming from and why is it always guys who don't cover the team regularly who spout it??

I hear ya on the fast WR's, but I see Reyes & Fowler as mere stop-gaps.

Don't forget Nall though... his arm & the fast WRs may be a good fit.

I don't think it'd take that big of a difference to keep KH or Nall out of the line-up... it's all on JP. All JP has to do is look good to get the nod, no doubt. But if he looks like crap again and 1 of the others looks good, I think he sits. We'll see, I hope he lights up the pre-season + the regular season and leaves the others behind.

JP: great athletic ability, strong arm for the deep ball..struggled managing the game & recognizing the blitz, and his odd personality & thin skin don't lead to a leadership role... previous staff lost confidence in him, may need a change of scenery in a QB-friendly environment to develop into anything more than a back-up.

22 posts later, and nobody touched the above quote. "Odd personality" indeed!

JP has plenty of talent, and what appears to be a good work ethic. I have never disputed this. He does clearly lack accuracy, although many attribute this to his inexperience. Personally, I don't claim to have a clue as to whether or not JP will ever be an accurate passer. Who really knows?

What I DID see was a hair flopping, high-fiving rookie, who was acting like what I considered to be an a-hole on the sidelines. Listening to TKO on Sirius, he wasn't exactly gushing with support either. It should be quite clear to all that his act was a turn off to veteran football players on the Buffalo Bills.

This of course is a Bills Board. As Bills Fans, we naturally tend to place a high value on our players. Imo, when judging what JP is actually worth, we should not look at the clearly stupid trade that brought him to Buffalo. A better gauge would be what teams were able to salvage for other failed quarterbacks such as Ramsey and Harrington. Both were high picks, and their play was at the very least comparable to that of Losman. This is a new, however questionable regime. They owe him nothing, and have little riding on him.

In summary, if JP gets his head together and wins the job, I will be happy. If not, so be it. There is zero reason to give him yet more preferential treatment which he never deserved in the first place.

While I truly hope that he is a success, I am not holding my breath.

A healthy start would be for JP to look and act like a professional.

GO BILLS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Plus, Holcomb and Losman are two different quarterbacks so while I think the team is being honest about the competition, are you not going to ultimately devise your offensive scheme around one or the other?

One thing I enjoyed watching from Losman was his ability to throw while rolling out. Holcomb has no ability to do such a thing, and as a result, Losman gives you more offensive options. The question becomes...do those options become embraced by the new staff?

I don't know. In fact, I'm not even sure I should be responding here at all.

702637[/snapback]

You're right about JP, but an athletic QB ultimately must make the right decisions.

JP may have the ability to roll out and throw on the run, but NFL defenses will quickly move to counter that if that's all he can do. For the QB, it's ultimately about he ability to read defemses and make good decisions quickly while under pressure. I don't think JP has played enough to show whether he can do that consistently.

I can't see buying a preview guide that comes out so early in the off-season.  In the past I attributed this to Athlon being a 2nd rate preview mag and wanting to cash in on the football fervor by being the first one out.

I agree, if it was a POS rag like Athlon's or Lindy's I never would've picked it up... I was surprised to see PFW out so soon.

I suspect putting out an early issue is a lot like walking through the food court at the mall, trying to figure out what you want because you're so freakin' hungry, and having the short asian lady hand you a toothpick with a piece of teriyaki chicken on it. It may not be what you really want for lunch, but once you get the taste in your mouth, you're buying a whole bowl of the crap.
