Buftex
Congrats to the Oilers. They knocked San Jose out tonight...nice game... The Edmonton and Anaheim series starts Friday. I will be curious to see how much the long layoff effects the Ducks. Edmonton is playing some scrappy hockey right now. Mind you, still pulling for the Sabres big time...but I am glad to see Mike Peca re-emerging in Edmonton. On the OLN postgame show, they mentioned that this is the first time since 1975 that the NHL "final four" teams, all missed the playoffs the previous season. Buffalo was one of those teams in 1975 as well. I guess the "new rules" have really changed the game...both of these series should be terrific. Chef Jim
Have a good story. Was doing a job fair at the Pond in Anaheim. As I was walking out I saw JS Giguere their starting (well used to be starting) goalie. Pointed at him, winked and said "watch out....here come the Sabres." He smiled and said they had a good team, very fast. I said yes, I was from Buffalo and followed them very closely. Said they were fun to watch, no super stars, just fast and very hard working. He said "yes, just like us." Told him I'm rooting for both, would love a Sabres-Ducks finals. He agreed. Wished him luck....... Drives a girly-girl Volkswagen SUV........fag. Just kidding, he's a great guy.

BuffOrange
I always thought of Peca as a good 2way player but the OLN guys said he's a defensive specialist? Everyone in my Philly based office is whining about the small markets that are left, but whatever - it's good hockey. How about a #6 seed getting home ice for the 2nd straight series - pretty cool for them.

Back when he was with Buffalo, the Sabres had so few goal scorers, outside of Satan, anyone who scored 15 or 20 goals was an offensive star. For a little guy, he still does a great job of keeping some of the better forwards in the leauge from feeling too free out ther on the ice. He was all over the place tonight. As for your friends in Philly, just remind them that Anaheim is not really a tiny market, and Edmonton will likely have half a nation pulling for them. Personally, I would be pulling for the Oilers, if Buffalo wasn't in there. Assuming the Sabres make it to the finals, I don't care who they play. I would hate to see a team from Carolina, or a team named the Ducks, win the whole thing. However, all four of these teams are good, whoever wins it, will deserve it. The Ducks and Oilers have been very entertaining all year....

In '75 the teams in the Semis were the Sabres (missed playoffs in '74), the Isles (missed EVERYTHING in '74 - 2nd worst record in the league), the Habs (who were upset in the 1st round by the Rangers in '74), and the PHLYERS that CLEMENT PLAYED ON WHO WERE THE DEFENDING SC CHAMPS! WTF is wrong with him? What he might have meant was that it hasn't ever happened and their statistician only looked back to the '75 playoffs (which is quite likely correct). Remember when he started game 1 for the Sabres against the Leafs in the conference finals in 99. He's definitely playing the best hockey of his career and I'm happy for him. I'd love to see Edmonton pull through.

They both picked the Sabres in the east, both agreeing that while much is being made about how similar the two teams are, Buffalo has a huge speed advantage with Carolinas defensemen. One of them pointed out that Buffalo plays "board to board" (passing the puck left to rite, from one board to the other in the offensive zone) as good as any team in recent memory. For what it is worth....

ExiledInIllinois
They meant since the playoffs expanded to 4 rounds in 1975, I believe. 694512[/snapback] Very true. Before that only 4 teams qualified in each division... When the league doubled to 12 in 1967. Before 1967... Then it was only the top four qualified out of the "original six"... 1942 (when the league reduced). Then before that, it is just plain ancient history with a few more teams here and there... Etc... Anyway... Prior to 1967... I guess it was real hard not to have all four teams not in the final four (playoffs)... Vitually impossible since only two teams sat out each year!...
