It could be that contemporary readers, the self-styled best and brigthest, turn to the comics for diversion, not immersion in a long-running story line.  Why would any remotely intelligent person get any sense of fulfillment out ofa  serial strip?

A strip was then and is not now a source of fullfillment. That's today's psychobabble. You somehow can't conceive that folks, before this nonstop innundation took hold, just simply enjoyed reading a story and and looked forward to the next installment.

Best comic that really sucks but you still read it anyways:

The Family Circus

Between his cartoons of the dotted line showing his kid walking eighteen miles for an ice cube or the cartoons where his son fills in while the dad is on vacation, it's like a Paris Hilton/Lindsay Lohan fight in a nightclub. You want to ignore it, but you just have to look.

I mentioned Pearls Before Swine earlier in the thread. They did a parody of the Family Circus that was hysterical. The link follows (read them from the bottom of the page up)

Don't know. But in the late 70's there was a line of Andy Capp snacks sold in vending machines. The Andy Capp Bacon Crisps were excellent.
