I watched The Sopranos for the first time

Good point, i thought that too but after reading a post on that msg board i pm'ed you, it sort of looks as if Bobby is Johnny Boy Soprano and Janice is Livia.  I don't remember Tony smiling during that scene, it actually looked as if Tony felt bad for Bobby, knowing that this man was unfortunate and stupid enough to marry his manipulative sister.

When Tony saw Bobby's son, I think it reminded him of himself as a boy, being treated as an idiot by his mother and not really getting any guidance from his father.

There was a definite smirk. Bobby has always been a mope, the only reason he was promoted from Jr's errand boy was his wife's death and the subsequent Janice connection. Can you imagine what would happen to AJ if he mouthed off like that in front of guests?

Bobby's always getting digs for being a poor earner and just does his Lumpy impression whever TS gets in his face about that or ridicules him for his model train hobby. I thought maybe he was going to blossom a little after he got in Paulie's face last week but TS didn't even feign sympathy when he didn't have enough brains to keep away from ghettotown after dark and got mugged by the bunch of wanna-be punks this week. Could be a misdirection but that's not charactoristic of how the show usually lays out a plot.

I thought the thing with Paulie was going to be a turning point for him, too.....for all of about fifteen seconds, he was going OFF on Paulie....but then that was it. He left the dinner like a little pansie, and now he's back to playing with his trains and wondering why his kid doesn't think he's cool. ;)
