TDRupp Posted May 11, 2006 Share Posted May 11, 2006 I ask for the following reason: If we don't sign Clements to a long-term extension before July 15, could we be in line for a 3rd rounder for UFA losses next year? I know. I know. He is worth more. I agree but since we will not Franchise him (agreement as part of him signing his tender) I think the Bills would be wise to have already planned on our approach for 2007 a bit. Meaning they signed a ton of lower tier UFA's this year so they don't have to next year. Good long-term planning?? I bring this up b/c while the signing of a lower tier UFA is lower risk, if you lose very good players and the net loss is 0 you, get squat for compensation like this past year. Did anybody really think that the late signing of Bennie Anderson might have cost us the difference between a 7th and a 4th (maybe a 3rd) round compensation pick? IMO, it did and to think Duke Preston could have played better over the whole season also makes me think that front offices (TD is this case) don't always consider it enough, Mike Gandy notwithstanding.. A team might lose a Clements but if you sign a comparable FA talent you get nothin. This player need not be a CB and there is a black box system which even caoches did not understand and cannot predict. Since the compensation given has dropped as originally in the CBA it was supposed to be phased out entirely most teams seem to ignore this factor until it happens. The black box does assign the compensation picks to specific players but as the Bills somehow got compensated for letting Lonnie Johnson walk this black box result is comical if anything. What I want to point out is that some of these UFA's Marv signed for 1 yr could help us in our net UFA losses next year for the 2008 draft. Of course, we have to replace them but since some of these guys are depth guys street FA's could possibly replace them. Also, we would need to sign some UFA's to help replace our 5 starting UFA's and others throught the 2007 Draft. Assuming King and Youboty progress well this year Middle LB, LOT, DE and K become needs unless we resign them. Here are the key (or potentially key) guys then.
