KRC
All right! That's what I have been advocating! Welcome to the revolution my brother!!!! 689400 I'll post the link again, for those of you interested. New Libertarian Movement There is a good essay by Kristan Overstreet there. Essay Linky Thingy A clip from the essay: We are the Libertarian Reform Caucus. We are dedicated to expanding freedom and reducing government power through the political process. Toward this end, we believe that the Libertarian Party is the only national political party which in any way agrees with this fundamental principle. However, we are dismayed at the Libertarian Party's consistent and overwhelming failure at winning contested partisan elections. It is our view that the primary reason for this failure is the extremism practiced by the Party and its leading thinkers, who place party purity of principle above victory. Some of us are Libertarian Party members and officers. Some of us are past party members, driven out by hostile and abusive purists who accuse us of being socialist because we believe in incremental change but not anarchy. Some of us are anarchists and former purists who have tired of repeating the same strategy year after year for no result. Some of us are people who are sympathetic to the party's overall stance but unwilling to support its most extreme and radical proposals. We are united in one belief; that the Libertarian Party must be reformed if it is to achieve its promise of more freedom and less government. We hold these truths to be unavoidable: that the purpose of a political party is solely to elect its candidates to public office; that the strategies of exclusionary membership, uncompromising radical change, and education and enlightenment of the voting public have not worked, do not work, and will never work; that voters will not vote for those who advocate revolution, chaos and anarchy unless they have nothing to lose; and that slow, incremental change works where immediate, all-or-nothing changes fail. We have, in the past, attempted to change the direction of this party on an individual basis. Our efforts have met abuse, personal attack, and even efforts to drive us from the party entirely. We have united in a last effort to make this party a viable political force rather than the philosophical society it currently resembles. Over the past year we have proposed and debated various changes within our membership. What follows represents those points on which the greatest majority of us agree, and which we shall support at state and national conventions with our votes and our active political activity. To reform the Libertarian Party into an organization more suited to its goal of electing candidates committed to expanding liberty in the United States... KRC
The more I hear you talk about this, the more inclined I am to join. The only thing that's kept me from being an active contributor to the LP is their consistency of nominating bad candidates. 689418 It doesn't help that they continually push out any moderate POV. You will never will on an extremist platform. If they were to push incremental progress towards their goals, suprisingly, they would win more elections. Cutting Taxes. Cutting the size of government. Reducing the infringements on civil liberties. A majority of te American population could get behind those ideas. Run on this platform: -You can cut waste from government without impacting any of the services currently provided. Cut that waste and use the money to either reduce the deficit or give an across the board tax break of the same percentage for anyone currently paying taxes (or both). -Social Security needs a major overhaul. The Republicans had a plan, but it failed (too extreme for the moderates). The Democrats want the problem to continue so that it will be an eternal campaign hotbutton. I propose the KRC approach: Keep SS and add private accounts. People can choose which they prefer. If they want private accounts, they control their money. If they are uncomfortable with controlling their own money, they can still send it to the government and hope that it is still there when they retire. -Promise (and keep that promise) to only vote for a budget that contains a surplus or is balanced. No new tax increases. If you want a new program, you need to cut an existing program. Spending needs to be controlled and the Reps and Dems have proven time and time again that they are incapable of controlling spending. My thoughts, get your name on their list. If they fail to change the platform/bylaws and push the party into a "less extremist" direction, then they are talking about forming their own party. Edit: Saw that you joined. Great!! The convention is the beginning of July.
Chef Jim
It is too bad that the Democrats still offer no reason to vote for them. Absolutely embarassing. Maybe, they should consider actually standing for something. Otherwise, they will see that lead quickly evaporate. Americans want solutions to problems, not whiney little bitches. Since the Democrats have offered nothing in return, they are nothing more than whiney little bitches. If things are so bad under Republican control, it should be easy to offer solutions that will fix the problems. They have offered nothing. Right now, they look like a Monty Python sketch: Democrats: Bush Bad!! Bush Bad!! Republicans: No he isn’t. Democrats: Bush Bad!! Worst President Ever!! Bush Bad!! Republicans: OK, what would you do? Democrats: Bush Ba…Err…what? Republicans: What would you do? Democrats: We’ll get back to you. Bush Bad!! Republicans: You have to have a plan as to what you would do to fix things. Democrats: We’ll get back to you. Bush Bad!! Republicans: Still waiting… Democrats: Almost there. Bush Bad!! Republicans: Anything yet? Democrats: Nope. Not yet. Bush Bad!! Republicans: We are getting close to election season. You might want to come up with something. Democrats: Putting the final touches on it right now. Tom Delay. Focus on Tom Delay. Tom Delay Bad!! Bush Bad!! Republicans: Done yet? Democrats: We have a major announcement. We will discuss the Democratic strategy for National Security. It will be released shortly. Stay tuned. Bush Bad!! Republicans: It’s about damn time. Democrats: Here is our strategy for National Security. Continue doing what Bush is doing, but spend more money doing it. Bush Bad!! Republicans: It took you all that time and that is all you can come up with? Democrats: See, we are tough on National Security. We are not the limp-wristed pansies we have appeared to be for decades. We are tough. Our Plan: Do exactly what the Bush has implemented, but spend more money doing it. Bush Bad!! Republicans: Yeah…OK. What about fixing the Social Security mess? Democrats: No private accounts!! Bush Bad!! Republicans: It is going bankrupt. If you do not want private accounts, then what do you want to do to fix it? Democrats: No private accounts. Bush Bad!! Republicans: So, you have no actual strategy to fix the problem, you are just going to let it get worse? Democrats: Bush Ba...errr...what? Abramoff. Focus on Abramoff. Bush Bad!! …and the vicious cycle continues… 689263 And now for something completely different. Yeah rrrrriiiiiiiiiight, that'll happen. Helmet_hair
Both parties don't offer us much, but I cannot see why anyone would defend an administration / party which directed NSA to begin collecting information about all of our personal phone calls. How can you defend that? Answer: you can't. 689254 First off so you know where I’m coming from, I consider myself a Reagan conservative so you could say we take it in the shorts no matter which party is in power these days, they are just taking turns on us. Call number logging is nothing new or illegal. In 1994 the Clinton administration spearheaded a new law that required all telephone and cellular phone companies to have the capability to log the numbers of all connections. Why would Clinton require phone companies to have the capability to log all phone numbers if they never intended to use it? There have been court cases that challenged this and it's been ruled that there is no expectation of privacy in the gathering of phone numbers and their connections. A phone number is a public number issued by a private company.
/dev/null
Which poll or polls are you referring to? One poll that asks who should control Congress? Or 435 polls, one for each district? Doesn't mean squat whether a majority of Americans think one party or the other should control Congress. What matters are the 435 individual House races
