ExiledInIllinois Posted May 3, 2006 Posted May 3, 2006 I liked Ike. Loved it when milk went from 2 cents to three, too...extra candy bar! I'd save one for the Saturday movies in the summertime. I don't suppose many here remember when the movies had "continuous showings"...that was when the flicks played all day long. You went in, and when the film rolled around to when you came in, you'de get up and leave. That's the origin of the phrase, "This is where I came in". 682481 Ya... That wouldn't float in today's society... They would become daycare centers... Think you could people to work on an honor system? My dear Stuck... We are doomed... You can't get anybody to contribute to the common good... It is all about ME and how much money is in it for ME...
RuntheDamnBall Posted May 3, 2006 Posted May 3, 2006 Please - no "victim" status or grand conspiracy. If a parent can't control what its kid consumes, sort through advertising, and if they are giving it the jingle to make the purchases, that parent needs to take a long hard look into a mirror. 682607 Didn't you kind of say as much that you as a kid took your milk money and used it for candy? What's the difference here, then? A kid could do the same thing and spend his lunch money on candy and soda these days, at school. At least you saved it to use it elsewhere. It wasn't like the schools were promoting it. I'm not saying you were wrong to do so; many kids will do this sort of thing because kids are more impulsive, and yeah, candy tastes better than school lunch. I'm saying that having these machines in school actually creates a situation in which this sort of thing is encouraged because it brings in money for the schools. It's no grand conspiracy -- simply, schools look to supplement their budgets with soda-contracts, and these companies prey on kids' impulses.

I'll be willing to offer my two cents then, but you're gonna have to get hold of a Ouija board and rap your knuckles on the table for me to do so...
HopsGuy Posted May 3, 2006 Posted May 3, 2006 And my point is - who cares? 682414 I'll tell you who doesn't care: the stock market. KO (Coke) is down 15 cents, while (PepsiCo) PEP is up 15 cents. Pretty much means that on-campus sales of sugar water don't mean much to the bottom line.
meazza Posted May 3, 2006 Posted May 3, 2006 check the profile bud. i'm 24, been 7 years since i was in high school. i'm not arguing about removing pop machines from schools. we didnt have one at my school and no oen cares. we had a juice mahcine and a powerade machine. And yes, we needed hall passes and bathroom passes in you werent in class. My point is, why only remove non-diet pop from schools? Either keep it all or get rid of it all. If you are going to give students access to pop, why should the school tell them they can only drink diet? 682409 Although I have a weakness for soft drinks that I've tried to control, diet drinks are even worse. Aspartame can have worse effects than sugar. They should just remove everything because at a young age, it is then when you develop your habits in terms of food. My older brother at his house stopped buying soft drinks because he didn't want his kids to develop the same eating habits he had.
cromagnum Posted May 3, 2006 Posted May 3, 2006 We just had milk, chocalate milk and the bubbler.... Seeing that picture with all the vending machines, has taken away the ability for kids to make money on their own in school... I made some nice coin selling bubblegum and other penny candy in school... Paper routes were great ways to fund my side business in school.

It's effects differ from sugars. http://www.ajcn.org/cgi/content/full/79/4/537

The problem is, all diet drinks made by the big 2 have aspartame in it. Although researchers disagree, there seems to be an agreement from some that aspartame has some highly negative effects to the nervous system. That's why i think like Ramius said that removing high sugar drinks but keeping drinks high in aspartame is not exactly the best idea.

I think it was in the late 1970's/early 1980's that Coca Cola switched from using cane sugar... You are an old timer... I was still young... Did you notice a taste difference?

I take it you kids have never brought in any decent Thai Stick? 682710 It is. I didn't research it or anything. Wasn't trying to do an afterschool special. I just heard that it has a higher THC concentration. That and that a few pushers i know are making more money selling viagra and these over the counter medications than they are selling coke. It's not a good trend. I have no idea what Xantacs is or whatever Melissa in Philly called it.
buckeyemike Posted May 3, 2006 Posted May 3, 2006 The only people "suffering" here are the filthy-rich soft-drink manufacturers that have been socking it to schools and kids. 682589 Amen to that. I think that the bad publicity that the soft-drink manufacturers have received and the fact that this whole nation consists of fat@$$e$ probably did the trick. That, and the episode of "The Simpsons" that spoofed the whole thing (remember Bart getting fat and having a heart attack? Best line was "The machines at school feed me now."). It certainly didn't win over any supporters to the side of the soda people. Mike
