smokinandjokin
There's no denying the impact a playmaking safety can have on the game. However, the two best in the NFL right now IMO, Ed Reed and Troy Polamalu, were drafted 24th and 16th overall, respectively. With Lawyer gone and Vincent on the decline, it was a need position (among others.) It definitely seems like the Bills went too high for Whitner. Too bad the Raiders effed everything up and passed on a QB to take Huff. Mark Kelso ( ) started four straight Super Bowls for the Bills. If you are going to go out on a limb for a player, why would it be a safety?
Alaska Darin
Safeties are increasing in importance every year, especially those who are versatile. Mark Kelso would be a train wreck today. I doubt quite seriously if NFL minds knew then what they know today about TP and ER that either would have gotten out of the top 10. Welcome to the draft. smokinandjokin
Safeties are increasing in importance every year 675756 I agree with your statement, but the recent drafts don't seem to reflect that. 2000- 0 safeties taken in the 1st round 2001- 2 safeties taken in the 1st round, with Archuleta at #20 being the first to go. 2002- 2 safeties taken in the 1st round, Roy Williams at #8 and Reed at #24 2003- 1 safety taken in the 1st round, Polamalu at #16 2004- 1 safety taken in the 1st round, Sean Taylor at #5 2005- 1 safety taken in the 1st round, Thomas Davis at #14 Seems like teams look for value at this position in later rounds. Would've thought there'd be more. Hopefully, as a #8 pick, Whitner turns out to be similar to another #8 pick, Roy Williams (only better in pass coverage!) Breni
Seems like teams look for value at this position in later rounds. 675834 This year: 6 safeties (including Huff) in the first 43 picks. That's a 14%, not bad. Safeties are red-hot this year. This may explain why Marv took the risk on Donte: too many teams were looking for S.
