I'm done excoriating this pick

Sure, he might. But take a look at all the late-round DTs we've drafted lately. How about that Anderson, Edwards, Sape and company?

Lighting up the league, huh?

Past results are not indicitive of future results. I have no problem passing on Bunkley or Ngata, this draft is deep at DT.

There was really nobody there at 8 that I would have been really happy about. The draft just played out about as badly as it could for the Bills in the first 7 picks.

How? There were 2 qbs left and apparent offers to trade down. Instead, the Bills reached for a safety, and these guys almost never go early. The PFW mock had this kid going to the Bears at 26.

It was idiocy, sheer idiocy. ;)

I'm not defending the pick by any means, it was horrible. I'm saying the draft played out as badly as it good for the Bills in terms of making a pick at the 8 spot (not trading scenarios). Brick didn't fall, Hawk didn't fall, Huff didn't fall. There was absolutely nobody on the board (IMO) that represented true value for the Bills at 8.

On the other hand the draft worked out pretty well if the Bills wanted to trade down. Unfortunately that didn't happen...

How so?  I'd venture to guess you've never seen either of them play more than the handful of highlight reels.  Watching Ngata's reel against USC showed he's lazy and fat and easily controlled.  I won't even get into the fact that he doesn't fit the defense we're going to run.

Bunkley would have made more sense to me but I'm not sure I'd spend the pick on him, either.  His knee and off field issues are serious matters, especially when you're talking about the salary cap.

I don't know crap about Whitner, but his size and numbers aren't issues and it looks like he makes plays.  If the rumors about Baltimore wanting him are true, that's pretty good news for us.

Fair enough. You may have a point there. What about trading down and taking him two or three picks later then? The problem isn't necessarily the selection, but WHEN it was made. Most projections had him in the 20s somewhere.

The problem was, Trading down didn't guarantee he would be there. Det could have taken them (they wanted a CB/S), Baltimore apparently wanted him, Just cause the Mocks didn't have teams interested in him, doesn't mean teams didn't want him.
