Chef Jim Posted April 23, 2006 Posted April 23, 2006 Now, now gentlemen. Don't want the Political Correctness police in this thread. 667951 Gentlemen? I said hockey players were gentlemen....I said nothing about us.
Ghost of BiB Posted April 23, 2006 Author Posted April 23, 2006 Gentlemen? I said hockey players were gentlemen....I said nothing about us. 667957 We're ass holes.
Alaska Darin Posted April 23, 2006 Posted April 23, 2006 Now why ya gotta go and hack on soccer??? It's not like they're mutually exclusive for gosh sakes. 667954 Because it's fun? Because I get a certain perverse pleasure from the memory of telling my Columbian neighbor to "fug off" after his tirade about the US WC own goal win and how even though no real American cares about soccer we're still better than his candy ass third world nation at the only sport they actually care about. Soccer fans annoy me - especially the ones who throw urine bombs or burn stuff. Worse than that is the argument that hockey and soccer are somehow similiar and that I'm simply too stupid to understand the nuances of the "world's game." Ridiculous. But mostly it's because I'm damn charming. Now go turn on the croquet championships and get ready for the snooze fest that is soccer.

Kelly the Dog Posted April 23, 2006 Posted April 23, 2006 Man, there was a ton of things to like about that game. The hockey Gods may be upon us after 30 seconds and the Flyers didnt score a goal on a fluke bounce. Miller was terrific in his first playoff game and both goals were unavoidable. The Sabres basically dominated play for 80-90% of the game I thought. They got some good breaks from the power play but they earned it. The passing was very crisp, the skating great. They were clearly the better team. The young guys didnt make mistakes. Pominville and Gustad and Vanek and Roy looked like they belonged. Max looked like the player he's been the last month. I don't know how this team played as well as they did without Briere, he's easily their best player (except, perhaps, McKee). The refs didnt change the way the game was called during the season (probably the best sign of all). Campbell having the killer hit? You're kidding me. Right after each goal of the Flyers the Sabres were on the offensive. Esche was terrific, the game could easily have been 5-2.

X. Benedict Posted April 23, 2006 Posted April 23, 2006 God life is beautiful. There is nothing quite like playoff hockey. The Sabres, a team that doesn't hit, had about 40 hits tonight. That guy Campbell hit is going to be talking to his mittens for 6 weeks. Greer played a hellava game. Too bad there aren't more letters to go around. McKee also played a great game, the goal notwithstanding. It wasn't Lydman's best game. He coughed up the puck puck 5 or 6 times. Looking forward to game 2. I suspect Philly will be gassed.
X. Benedict Posted April 23, 2006 Posted April 23, 2006 Max looked like the player he's been the last month. 667970 Max could have slowed down a bit and been more effective. His play was rushed. He was playing like he needed to prove something right away, and kept calling for the puck.
Ghost of BiB Posted April 23, 2006 Author Posted April 23, 2006 They are similar. And you're not too stupid to understand that, you're just too !@#$ing arrogant. 667969 Thinking about it, watching them play soccer on ice could get mildly entertaining. Must use leather soled shoes.

Too bad there aren't more letters to go around. McKee also played a great game, the goal notwithstanding. Greer was spectacular good. I loved when he decked Forsberg after Peter elbowed Drury in the leftwing corner. Touched off a nice melee. I initially blamed JM for that goal too but I'm sure the game plan is to take the puck of PF's stick at the first opportunity, especially on the PP. Roy should have read McKee and rotated down, instead of leaving the 2-on-1 while standing next to JM. It wasn't Lydman's best game. He coughed up the puck puck 5 or 6 times. Understatement of the night. Terrible game by TL. Looking forward to game 2. I suspect Philly will be gassed. 667972 It's going to be interesting. I visited the Flyer board and it's hysteria. The refs screwed them, Gary Bettemen deserves death and if he ever shows his face in Philly, that's what he'll get, they're going to be fine as long as Peter the Great skates, etc. They obviously saw a different game than I did. It's no wonder that team struggles at home. The collective brain drain in the arena alone is too much to overcome.
Alaska Darin Posted April 23, 2006 Posted April 23, 2006 Max looked like the player he's been the last month. 667970 I thought he sucked most of the night. Made alot of bad decisions and played too fast. The Flyers did give him a ton of respect, which may change if he doesn't stop turning the puck over.

When was the last time the Flyers were scared of any Sabre not named Martin or Perreault? He was always moving like he's been lately and lightning looking to strike. He gave it up a bit but he's amazing at getting and controlling the puck when the first 4-5 years he was amazing at giving it up. I guess it comes down to I was so used to the other team controlling the puck and making the crisp passes and I still can't get used to this team controlling the action for the majority of the game even though I have seen it game in game out all year.

It was interesting to see the Philly reaction to him. I just didn't think he played very well. One other point before I pass out from celebratory booze, Gaustad was stellar on the draws. For all the worries about how the rookies would play, Gaustad played a very composed, veteran-like game. What a solid player.

The Sabres used to look all the same to me. Small and kinda fast but not really talented. Scrappy but not in the same league as the team they were playing. Now they swarm and you can tell the different guys without the numbers. The Flyers ALL looked big and slow and sluggish out there compared to the Sabres.
meazza Posted April 23, 2006 Posted April 23, 2006 Let's just say, I agree. It's too bad so many people don't get it.**None of you soccer fairies better chime in, either. There's no solidarity here. 667913 I like soccer but hockey is better than soccer and i doubt anyone can contest that.

There is the Gagne-Forsberg-Knuble line, and then there is little past that. Philly can't match for speed or balance. Of course Esche could stop 55 biscuits a night - but that is pretty hard to do every second day.
Oneonta Buffalo Fan Posted April 23, 2006 Posted April 23, 2006 Our win is the #1 story on espn's NHL section. Sweet!

meazza Posted April 23, 2006 Posted April 23, 2006 667997 it's true. nothing comes close to postseason hockey, not even the nfl.
