BillsGuyInMalta
In a way, FG is a lot like The Critic (but, funnier, I agree). The Critic's funniest stuff was movie parodies, NOT humor related to the plot. FG is much the say way. I find the disassociated humor funny, but, my testing suggests it doesn't help drive audience from week-to-week. 660939 Thats actually an excellent comparison. The Critic's comedy, when watched today with the DVD set, still holds up...but its very dated material. For those who remember what movies they are creating parodies for, its downright hilarious...but as time goes on the jokes make less and less sense since pop culture obviously has changed. The same will happen to Family Guy...since almost ALL of its jokes are references to movies, 70s or 80s tv shows or other pop culture items...the shows really are only funny to those who remember the reference while shows like South Park and The Simpsons will have more lasting appeal. On animated show that I do love and think has amazing potential is an Adult Swim one called "The Venture Brothers". I watched a few episodes last week and just couldnt stop laughing, its actually some of the funniest writing I've seen for a TV show in a loooooonnnnng time. Although it's taking them forever to get a second season made.
BillsGuyInMalta
Venture Brothers is outstanding. Although it's taking them forever to get a second season made. 661010 I know, but it makes sense...most of Adult Swim's cartoons are 15 minute ones while Venture Brothers is your typical half hour show...and if they got slated to produce +20 new episodes its obviously going to take them longer to make. You gotta love The Monarch though...the episode towards the end of the season where Dr. Venture finds out all you have to do is call the cops on your arch-nemesis and The Monarch gets sent to prison is hilarious. The whole "MTV Scared Straight" segment was brilliant.

Call the cops and tell them there's a guy in a butterfly costume shooting a laser at my robot?" The Monarch: "If anyone needs me, I'll be in my room.....cry-ing!" Chef Jim
Bart: I'm a pretty bad kidCartman: What's the worst thing you ever did? Bart: Well, one time I cut the head off a statue Cartman: Oh, kinda like the time I didn't like this one kid, so I killed his parents, ground up their bodies, made chili with it and fed it to him... 660872 Isn't chili out of season though? Love the ending, see we can make fun of our country and Jesus by crapping on them but God forbid we show a cartoon of Mohamad. Also loved the dig at the press over the first amendment, they made them dumber than Bush....is that even remotely possible?
Alaska Darin
They aren't criticizing Family Guy for being lowbrow. They criticizing FG for being stupid, and there's a pretty big difference. People don't remember episodes of Family Guy - they remember the jokes, because the jokes have nothing to do with the plot. Pretty much every episode is: "This is almost as bad as the time _________________ ." (Cut to joke referencing TV show or movie from 1970s or 1980s) Over and over. Which means Family Guy is pretty amusing but the shows have no lifespan. They lose a lot of their appeal the second time you see them (compare that to classic Simpsons or South Park). So I laughed the first time I saw Peter drive the Dolorean from Back to the Future, but when I saw that episode as a re-run, it did nothing for me. Meanwhile, episodes of the Simpsons and South Park develop their jokes over 30 minutes each episode. That's the reason the pay-off in the "Scott Tennorman Must Die" episode of SP was so awesome that we're still laughing about it. That episode will still be funny 5 and 10 years from now. South Park has its fair share of poop jokes, but Family Guy will never come within 200 miles of making a pair of episodes so full of cutting satire as South Park just did. 660929 I can't say whether you're right or wrong, because I've never watched Family Guy for more than a couple of minutes.
