apuszczalowski Posted April 10, 2006 Posted April 10, 2006 Tony Mandarich and Ryan Leaf were pretty epic failures too. Both #2 overall picks. 657805 yes, but not Bills picks and why would you draft a guy with the last name Flowers? You want some guys with intimidation factors, and having a guy named Flowers isn't really intimidating
Typical TBD Guy Posted April 10, 2006 Posted April 10, 2006 Oh no, I am. But those were two awful 1st rounders. The RJ for a #1 was bad. Todd Collins with a #2 was no great shakes either. Then there was a 2nd for Bucky Brooks 657786 You may have a point with the RJ trade. Wasn't that a #9 overall pick we gave up? He definitely set this franchise back many years. We didn't waste as much time with Collins, and he was just a 2nd rounder. Brooks was bad too, but was only a 2nd round WR. Flowers sucked, but he was only a late first round pick, and you have to remember that about 33% of all 1st round picks bust anyway. Mike Williams certainly hurt this franchise a lot - especially when you think that maybe TD delayed getting more OL help because he assumed Mike would pan out. But Walt Patulski - among other busts from the late 60's-early 80's - probably hurt the most. A #1 overall pick busting in the pre-free agency era was an even bigger deal than it is now. Of the draft picks mentioned so far, I'd rate them from worst to "least worst" as: 1. Patulski 2. RJ 3. MW 4. Collins 5. Flowers 6. Bucky Brooks
BillsFan Trapped in Pats Land Posted April 10, 2006 Posted April 10, 2006 The MW pick was a nut crusher. Of course, it could be worse....we could have ended up with Joey Harrington.
#1TN Bills Fan Posted April 10, 2006 Posted April 10, 2006 This may be the first mock that has the Bills taking Cutler. Must be he thinks that Marv is not telling the truth about not drafting a QB "savior" http://www.sportsline.com/nfl/story/8289755 656266 I admit that it would be nice, but I see a fatal flaw in his predictions, and that's his pick for the Saints. I hate to say it, but the Saints are going to take D'Brick number 2 overall. The Jets would then be left with no other option other than to take Cutler. I mean come on people, does anyone really think that Ramsey will be their answer to their QB woes, assuming that Pennington does not come back to full strength???
BillsFan Trapped in Pats Land Posted April 10, 2006 Posted April 10, 2006 Didn't the saints just trade for a LT, and they took a RT last year??
BillsFanNC Posted April 10, 2006 Posted April 10, 2006 First round busts Booker Moore and Perry Tuttle taken in '81 and '82 were pretty darn brutal.
Lurker Posted April 10, 2006 Posted April 10, 2006 You could make a good case that Mike Williams was the dumbest move in Bills history. Followed closely by Flowers. 657714 Flowers might not be the all-time worst (gotta go with Patulski), but I'll give you he might be top 5. Sad as the MW situation was, it's revisionist history to call the pick "dumb," given that every draft board in the nation had him going in the top 10 slots that year.
Sisyphean Bills Posted April 11, 2006 Posted April 11, 2006 Taking Antowain Smith over Corey Dillon wasn't such a great move. The James "I'm legally blind" Williams pick was a serious . And then the "big run": Moore, Tuttle, Hunter, and Drane. The 77 draft was started off by Phil Dokes. Curtis Brown a career backup... Man, what a haul that year. Al Cowlings has to go on this list. OJ's bronco buddy. The Bills 2nd round picks are a veritable Hall of Shame.
