dave mcbride Posted April 4, 2006 Posted April 4, 2006 http://nflhistory.net/shared/draft2.asp?Team=1 going back to 1967, the only good player they've ever gotten in the fifth round is john holocek, and he was injury prone. holocek aside, jay foreman, jonathan linton, mike devlin (who never did anything for the bills), matt darby, and john kidd are the highest of the fifth round lowlights, but the likes of a.j. ofodile, carl byrum, and sebastian savage are far more representative. (indeed, john butler is the only bills gm who was ever able to draft more than camp fodder in the fifth round). god, is the second day of the draft overrated ... whoops - forgot that polian drafted darby.

I only looked at the last 10 years but those names struck out at me. You're not gonna find all stars in the 5th rd well rarely but these players have been decent at one time or another.
Astrobot Posted April 4, 2006 Posted April 4, 2006 What a great run we had in Round 1 from '85 to 91. The Round 1 picks were superb for this stretch; no wonder we went to 4 Shows in a row. 1985 1 1 1 Bruce Smith Virginia Tech DE 1986 1 16 16 Ronnie Harmon Iowa RB 1987 1 8 8 Shane Conlan Penn State LB 1988 2 13 40 Thurman Thomas Oklahoma State RB 1989 3 26 82 Don Beebe Chadron State WR 1990 1 16 16 James Williams Fresno State DB 1991 1 26 26 Henry Jones Illinois DB
R. Rich Posted April 4, 2006 Posted April 4, 2006 The 5th round is a black hole. Oh no! Head for the basement, everyone! Don't forget your bottled water and canned goods.

ajzepp Posted April 4, 2006 Posted April 4, 2006 I'd like to see that expanded to all 32 teams, just so I know where we stand. 652028[/snapback] I would too.....I don't think you'd find that every other team has all sorts of pro bowlers and starters from the 5th round. They are out there, that's for sure....but they are few and far between. I would bet that we've done at least average in the fifth round of the draft.
stuckincincy Posted April 4, 2006 Posted April 4, 2006 It sure is a hole. I keep a copy of the B'gals drafts since '82, from NFL.com. Over those 24 years, here are the players: Paul Sorensen Jeff Christiansen Barney Bussey Tony Degate Lee Davis Leon White Marc Logan Greg Horne Herb Wester Natu Tautagoloa Lynn James Mike Arthur Craig Thompson Forey Duckett Trent Pollard David Dunn Greg Myers Andre Purvis Nicolas Luchey Robert Bean Victor Levya Kahlid Abdullah Maurice Mann Adam Keift. Recognize these guys? Dunn was a good wr, Luchey was brought back last year as a fill-in when Chris Perry got injured, Kahlid Abdullah got busted up (bad thing - he might have worked his way into a starting position), and OL Keift, injured in camp in '05.

BillsGuyInMalta Posted April 4, 2006 Posted April 4, 2006 I just decided to pick one draft to check up on and went to the 2000 Draft. In the 5th round, the following players were taken: Tutan Reyes Clark Haggans Shane Lechler Kabeer Gbaja-Biamila Arturo Freeman Dante Hall Kiwaukee Thomas Chad Morton Superstars? Not really (aside from KGB and Hall). But still talented if you know where to look.

ajzepp Posted April 4, 2006 Posted April 4, 2006 Wow, there were actually quite a few nice players from 2000

To be fair, we should count picks taken in the 6th and 7th round as well, because these players WERE available, no?
