Well, we'll learn one of two things tonight:

1) if he's still a legit heavyweight champ contender

2) if living through his last fight was a miracle

He's never been a legit heavyweight contender.

I'd disagree. In an age of no legit heavyweight contenters, he was a contender.

he was one MRI away from fighting tyson at the ralph... i'm not into boxing at all. I'm far from an expert, but that's a contender in my book.

So because he was one fight from fighting a guy who hasn't won a legitimate fight in a decade, he was a contender?

Joe Mesi's "Record"

Twenty nine wins, the only one of note being over former Olympic medalist David Izon, whose best days were over five years before. The 34 year old Izon is who Mesi should look at when he wants to see how he's going to end up. A guy whose early record was made against carefully chosen opponents, who ended up an injured shell of himself because he kept taking fights after he was exposed.

Valid point.

Lets be real..Joe's career is the equivalent of the Sabres scheduling only games vs local colleges and bar league teams...rolling up a huge record, then deciding they were ready for the NHL Playoffs..while it is a nice story..he would get his clock cleaned by an upper echelon HW...

HW boxing has LONG since taken a major nosedive.

Brewster and Rahman are top contenders. You have to think if Mesi was in shape he could punch with those guys. It is a sad division.

i like boxing, and champ from buffalo would be awesome, but saying mesi's a contender just because the division sucks is like saying i could put on a few pounds and play guard for the bills because our line sucks.

the guy NEVER beat anybody good, and he's at a point where the next time he gets his brains scrambled could be his last. for his own sake, i wish he would hang it up.

But sadly, there's money to be made so that won't happen til it's too late I'm afraid. :D

Jack Mesi says they will be looking to fight again in 30 - 35 days . Report from Fox news does not sound very good:

Joe Mesi

The three judges all scored the fight 80-72 for Mesi.

The eight-round bout was sanctioned by the Puerto Rico Boxing Commission, the first such entity to grant Mesi a license to step back into the ring after the injury.

The 32-year-old had his license suspended indefinitely by the Nevada Athletic Commission after sustaining at least two subdural hematomas in victory over Vassiliy Jirov in Las Vegas in March 2004.

Mesi was barred from fighting anywhere in the United States, including Puerto Rico, a U.S. territory. The suspension was lifted through a Nevada court order in December.

Mesi (30-0, 25 KOs) was ranked No. 1 among heavyweight contenders in the World Boxing Council at the time of his suspension.

Bellamy (14-5-4, 9 KOs) dropped his gloves in the middle of the fourth, allowing Mesi to land several combinations to the head. Bellamy had some blood in his nose and mouth at the start of the fifth.

In the sixth, Mesi had a bruise below the right eye. He tried to grind down Bellamy with his left jab during most of the round.

Bellamy, who landed a hard right uppercut to Mesi's chin in the seventh, was bleeding from the nose when he reached the corner after the bell.

The bleeding continued in the final round, while Mesi's right eye started to close.

Both fighters came out swinging aggressively in the first round, connecting shots to the head and body.
