Gavin in Va Beach Posted March 26, 2006 Posted March 26, 2006 Gas tax on miles, not gallons, testedPORTLAND, Ore., March 25 (UPI) -- Oregon is testing the idea of collecting highway funds through a tax on miles driven, rather than gasoline consumed. Eighty percent of Oregon's highway money comes from its 24-cents-per-gallon gas tax. If the state promotes reducing gasoline consumption and consumers tend to buy the fuel-efficient vehicles, including hybrids, highway revenues would take a hit, The New York Times reported. The test program uses a global positioning system to track miles driven, using a black box to calculate how many miles are clocked in-state, out of state and during rush hour. http://upi.com/NewsTrack/view.php?StoryID=...25-031322-1742r Soon we will all have satellites tasked to tracking our every movement and charging us a tax every time we take a dump...

Might makes some interesting parental conversations though!

What is the IBM commercial... "Help Desk" thingy? Tracking shipments. The government will learn a lot from business.
KD in CA Posted March 27, 2006 Posted March 27, 2006 So if people do the right thing by the energy crisis and buy a hybrid, the government will do whatever they can to replace their 'lost' tax revenue (ignoring the fact that environmental and highway maintenance costs would decline), which will then negate the benefit of buying the hybrid. This is fuggin absurd. Bring on the revolution.

GG Posted March 27, 2006 Posted March 27, 2006 Kinda defeats the point of getting a gas efficient car, no? May as well ride in a highway tank powered by 600 horses.
