ExiledInIllinois Posted March 22, 2006 Posted March 22, 2006 ... Termite. Just got this on a inside forum... Don't know how true this can be, but remember the the problems with the Formosan termites that they have down in LA and especially the NOLA area where it has been reported for years how they were ravaging structures down there... Well... Apparently the nasty little termite is showing up in mulch made from downed trees??? Not sure how true this is and if anybody can give creedance to this story. Allegedly this cheap mulch can be showing up at Home Depot or Lowes??? Again... Not sure to believe this, but just as the Asian longhorned beetle caused problems and quarantined removal here in Illinois... Wouldn't regulations apply to this situation? Another question is... Do the termites live in the trees or just structures? Could be a big problem if they are taking the wood structures and mixing it in with mulch too? Just a few things to think about... Any word on this or help in clarifying would be appreciated.

VABills Posted March 22, 2006 Posted March 22, 2006 Even local papers had this debunked the other day. http://fredericksburg.com/News/FLS/2006/03...03212006/176778
mead107 Posted March 22, 2006 Posted March 22, 2006 it seems we never had a tick problem with the cat and dog till started using mulch in the yard
ExiledInIllinois Posted March 22, 2006 Author Posted March 22, 2006 Thanks! I figured it was too surreal to be true. The longhorned beetle infestation in mulch on the northside of Chicago was quarantined pretty quickly a few years back. I guess regulation and government intervention is a good thing in this case. Who knows what could happen in a truly "free-market?" I had to get my polictical dig in...

Here, there is a Sat. morning call-in gardening show on the radio - the host is very knowledgable - his name is Ron Wilson. http://www.55krc.com/pages/ronWilson.html He cautions against buying bulk mulch - the truck load stuff - from anybody other than a reliable garden shop, because his experience tells him that for that cheap price, they grind up anything and everything, including diseased wood and organic matter, and infestations.
IDBillzFan Posted March 22, 2006 Posted March 22, 2006 Do the termites live in the trees or just structures?639030[/snapback] They usually live in trees, until they hitch a ride on the mulchtrain and end up in LA, where they usually sublet a one-bedroom condo on the water and share it with as many termites as they can fit. It's not my business how they live, but they've lately taken to selling the baby girl termites to older male termites as love slaves and child labor. It just breaks your heart to see baby girl termites gnawing on a four-by-four when all the termites in Termiteville know they're better suited to gnaw on baseboards and window frames. They've been trying to get this regulated, but the termite union is pretty strong here.
