Mark Vader Posted March 18, 2006 Posted March 18, 2006 Arizona has already stated they'll match anything, so why are we getting excited? 634034 I'm excited because this is the first serious move I have seen the Bills make at trying to upgrade the O-Line. Yes, the Cards may very well match the offer. Still it is good to see the effort put forth by Marv & Co.
VABills Posted March 18, 2006 Posted March 18, 2006 I haven't seen him play, so I don't know what to think. If Marv likes him, I trust his instinct at this point.
Lurker Posted March 18, 2006 Posted March 18, 2006 Once again when did Arizona officially report this, link? I'm not getting my hopes up that much because I know they still have a lot of room under the cap. All I've heard is a report from Kffl presuming they would match an offer, a lot different then an official word from a team source. 634037 Starting guard Wells meets with Buffalo Cardinals starting left guard Reggie Wells, a restricted free agent, visited Buffalo on Tuesday, and it's not clear whether the Bills will make him an offer. The Cardinals recently gave Wells the low tender of $712,000, retaining the right to match any offer Wells may receive. If the Cardinals decline to match, they would receive a sixth-round pick in return. It's likely, however, the Cardinals would match anything but an outrageous offer. They are about $14 million under the salary cap of $102 million, so it would be hard for the Bills to structure a deal in a way to prevent the Cardinals from matching. "We certainly desire to keep Reggie," said Rod Graves, Cardinals vice president for football operations. "We're not surprised there would be interest in him." The Cardinals would match an offer unless "somebody did something totally unexpected," Graves said. "Then we would have to discuss our position." Wells' agent, Tony Agnone, did not return a phone message, but Graves said Agnone has kept the Cardinals informed of Wells' situation.
Ozymandius Posted March 18, 2006 Posted March 18, 2006 Yawn. Wake me when Arizona doesn't match. Won't happen.
Gardinier Posted March 18, 2006 Posted March 18, 2006 It will be a total stunner if we get him - he is a stable presence on that Arizona line. As just a "depth" player he will command more than expected. Although I would be very pleased to find that I am dead wrong.
Formerly Allan in MD Posted March 18, 2006 Posted March 18, 2006 How about a trade guys? Give them a relatively high pick, if we really want this guy and they are willing to forgo the big salary. Bidwell has always been a spendthrift, or sorts.

Guest BackInDaDay Posted March 18, 2006 Posted March 18, 2006 The Cards signed FA OG Milford Brown last week. Milford played his last 4 seasons on that renowned Houston O-line. Please tell me this isn't the guy who makes Wells expendable. "Brown appeared in 13 games last season with the Houston Texans. He started in 12 of those games. Originally a sixth-round selection by the Texans in the 2002 NFL supplemental draft out of Florida State, Brown has appeared in 19 career games with 16 starts at guard in four seasons in the NFL." Dan III Posted March 18, 2006 Posted March 18, 2006 Bills sign Cardinals guard Wells to offer sheet The Arizona Cardinals will have a tough choice in trying to decided whether to match the offer sheet the Bills gave to guard Reggie Wells. Wells signed a five-year, $17.6 million offer sheet that has a $3 million signing bonus and another $2 million in a guaranteed roster bonus. The Cardinals have seven days to match the offer. If they don't, they would receive a sixth-round draft choice. -- John Clayton http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=2372555
BuffBills#1 Posted March 18, 2006 Posted March 18, 2006 That isn't cheap for a guard, but i still like the signing, or attempted signing.
kasper13 Posted March 18, 2006 Posted March 18, 2006 I would have gave him a $14 million/1 year contract so Arizona couldn't match just to PO Dennis Green. The Cardinals are about the only team left Bills fans can laugh at.
Casey D Posted March 18, 2006 Posted March 18, 2006 Pretty stunning offer from the Bills in terms of money--they must really like this guy. Fits Marv's MO, players still on the way up(hopefully), not on the way down. This offer will stun the Cardinals. They gave him a lowball offer, so they only get a a 6th in return. If they'd offered him the $1.5M tender, they'd have kept him, or at worst gotten a 1st round for him. Big miscalculation by the dysfunctional Cards. Marv seems still pretty good at poker. If the Cards were not even willing to give this guy a high one year tender, are they gonna give him a $3M signing bonus and a multi-year contract? All their talk about keeping him was before they knew he was gonna get big bucks at a very young age. We'll see if they stick with that, because they already have F$%#ed this up, so don't be surprised to see us get this guy--it is the Cardinals we are dealing with after all...CD

Compare the two teams recent history. At least the Cardinals signed a player, James, that has talent. Not a bunch of scubs that couldn't start for their old teams.

Or more accurately, what middle school? And the Cardinals have always been pathetic, when they get to one Super Bowl, tell me how wonderful they are... CD

CD 634351 Holding on to 10 years ago is the mistake Ralph made in bringing Marv back. Why don't you look this up? What was the date of the Cardinals last playoff game and what was the date of the Bills last? You might be surprised. Is Marv in the 'Hall' as a GM or a coach? Jim Kelly is in the Hall. Make him GM. He has as much expierence at it as Marv has and would probably do a better job.

Overpaying a 30+ yr old running back is something only Arizona would do. The recent history of the Cardninals is that its consistent with their not so recent history: they lose alot of games. So Marv should go out and spend all of the cap space on over the hill vets like Grady Jackson and Sam Madison? Would that make it acceptable? If we hadnt spent all of the cap room within the first 3 days of freeagency on players you know from your fantasy league from years past you consider it a disapointment and Marv a dodering old fool. This is the NFL. If you want to look at history look at the Patriots and Eagles formula vs. the Redskins or Raiders. One team builds through the draft and siging character free agents, one overpays for "names". One consistently wins and one consistently disappoints.

I guess they were thinking about putting him at center.
Frez Posted March 18, 2006 Posted March 18, 2006 Cards are way under the cap, correct? I won't be surprised when they match the offer.

But you should go back to to your pre-algebra homework and bring that grade up instead of wasting everyone's time on this board.
