Alaska Darin
Doesn't matter. He could wear swastikas and the idiot Democrats would vote for him in droves. NY continues to get exactly what it deserves.
PastaJoe
If by Appalachia he means that the areas are hurting for well-paying jobs and their downtowns look like ghost towns, then it was an appropriate comparison, and I'm glad that a potential governor is taking notice. Utica, Rome, Syracuse, Buffalo, and Niagara Falls are all having tough times. The exception may be Rochester.
olivier in france
Appalachia?! From Rochacha to the Falls?!! it looks like this guy has not traveled much in the Appalachian...
OnTheRocks
he is close to being correct. the area's off the thruway are upscale compared to the counties just south and north of the thruway. Yates, Otsego, Schoharie Madison counties.....look like the wealthy older brother of Appalachia. The rural communitites of Upstate are really in trouble and have been over the last 40 years as nearly all the farms have gradually shut down the problem is that most democratic programs he intends to put in place will only make it worse. It is funny how the most blatant act of illegal business practice went virtually unpunished in NY. The transit workers strike was illegal and caused huge financial losses, much more so than many of the other businesses that Spitzer went after. Because he needs the Union votes, the whole debacle seemed to disappear and all was forgiven. I don't remember hearing that any of the fines were actually enforced and you certainly didn't hear Spitzer spewing his normal self rightous babble about protecting us from all that is wrong in corporate America. NY politicians always pretend to care about Upstate NY prior to elections. Hillary toured Upstate and made all kinds of promises. I know, all politicians pull ths stunt. We'll see what happens once he is elected.

Just saw an article they lost more people last year than any time in the past 15, the second to Erie county. It's a wasteland.

GG
At least he didn't compare it to France. Oh, hi oliver. 633450 Hey, why not? It would probably make as much sense as French socialists inciting the population to make sure that unemployment stays in the double digits. When you need a laugh, there's always French Labor issues. Rochester although has lost people isn't crummy. and is far being a wasteland. it is going through a growth spurt drawing new business and also seeing current businesses expand. OnTheRocks
what programs are those? 633606 "Smoke and Mirror" programs. On the campiagn trail doing a lot of talking and not saying anything. As evidenced by the bold link to his agenda and plans for NY State. Sure,...he is real clear what he is going to do. Spitzer 2006 About as clear as the IRS tax code.

Hey, this could really work. 633610 Most corporations don't want to come to a state run by a guy who gets off on the publicity that comes with suing big bad corporations. He doesn't just press charges against the company, he does it in the most flamboyant, public, "look at me" manner possible. If he was a cop you would be crying about police brutality! When a union comits a crime that affects many more people than any corporate scandal, he has no interest in punishing them. There is no good press in punishing a conductor or ticket window attendant. I don't know about you, but I don't know. I haven't been around except to visit since 1975. I don't get a lot of warm fuzzies reading what I do from the locals, here. Looks overall, like the "Industrial North" went "south".

It has it's issues, but Buffalo even has a lot of nice areas, especially north towns area. It has lost a lot of it's ethnicity, which is too bad. Also, there still seems to be the old industrial union mentality even in the Mighty taco workers. A lot of what you see here is typical, the whoa is me and the guvment / management is screwing me. Butthere are also a lot of smart people, who are trying there best to make things better, which I don;t think you see too much of Appalachia. The problem is the ones always bitching / looking for the handouts and really a major drag on the ones trying to make it better who just get beaten down by the deluge of taxes that get imposed. OnTheRocks
one of the things that is breaking the backs of Rural upstate New Yorkers is the attempt of some of the school systems to push through bond votes for astronomical numbers. many of the rural schools were built in the pre 1950's and are falling apart. do they need new facilities? Sure they do....it is the new atheletic fields and entertainment auditoriums they keep including in their agendas that voters are balking at. quite often the deals are pushed in the winter months when most senior citizens are in the south. i have seen a number of battles where school boards have been extremely decieptful on how much of the burden will fall on them and how much the federal or state govt will pick up on the tab. i think they are finding out it is the kids who are getting pushed through school systems now based on their high/lo self esteem philiosophy... may not be too bright. however the old timers who have been around awhile are a little sharper than they anticipated and not taking anyone's word for what is being stated on the budgets.
