i like him on special teams, and i wouldnt mind seeing him try the new cover 2 before we make any decisions. I understand he's still probably going to suck, but at least lets see what he's got in camp.

i don't recall him making too many plays on ST, though many people tout him as a GREAT special teamer. anyone know his actual stats on coverage teams???

Just dropping by to expound on that key off-season topic?   Must be a slow day.

Been trying to debunk that myth for a while now. According to NFL.com play-by-play Wire's stellar ST statistics this year:

ST tackles - 3

ST penalties - 3 (1 declined)

Wire has never led the STs in tackles. He was not even minimally in the top 4 the year before last. I personally do not ever remember him making a great ST play - or even a good open field tackle.

The key thing to me about the special TEAM is that this TEAM finiished ranked #1 statistically in the NFL the last two years in a row.

This statistically great performance this season did not make any difference as both the offense struggled and the defense struggled. However, the special TEAM performance was pivotal to winning streak season before this one.

Wire was certainly a consistent performer on this successful special TEAM.

I think this means several things:

1. He did not appear to be a dynamic individual force on the special TEAM likre for example Steve Tasker was. However, there was no Bill on this special TEAM that can even remotely be compared to this HOP finalist. This really only goes to show how spoiled we were having him and that it is simply dumb to expect any ST player to meet this standard, because you can still be part of a very successful special TEAM that is best in the NFL and neither have gaudy numbers or be a stand-by in the highlight reels.

2. He was made captain of this very successful unit which is no small honor or a meaningless role.

3. Still, is one thing to be a role player with the substantial but doable contract of a 3rd round draft choice and would be quite a different thing to be a role player on a successful unit if it costs much to resign him now that he is a UFA. If the market gives him big bucks (which would be a testimonial that professional footbaall assessment guys judge him to be a valuable player, I would be seriously interested in looking for a cheaper replacement for him,

However, if the market allows us to keep Wire with little or no raise, then I say keep him.

Overall, his play as a #2 SS does not justify keeping him. GW/JG reached by asking him to start as a rookie at a position he had never played before at any level of organized ball. However, he ha been a team leader of one of the most successful units in the league and I think comments ragging on him are probably more motivated by his disastrous play as a starting SS rather than folks recognizing that he was a leader of one of the best special TEAMS in the NFL.

He does not deserve the big bucks or a long-term deal simply for leadership of a successful special TEAM, but resigning him at little or no raise is fine by me and I think he deserves that.

I think the ragging on him for his admittedly non-highlight reel play is actually unreasonable given him being a consistent part of a successful special TEAM. As long as the market does not give him the keys to the kingdom I say resign him.

Those who advocate cuttting him give us little more than a rant which can usefully be ignored UNLESS they also say who and how he will be replaced as part of the special TEAM.

I recall the Jacksonville game opener 2 years ago. Coy understands coverages really, really well

Cut him and move on. Christ, even Fake Fat Sunny has to flush the toilet once in awhile.

Sorry PG - this has got to be your biggest reach of all in CWAC-ery. Now you admit that he is not "special" - but simply because he is a part of the special TEAM then he should be kept??????? That means we shouldn't cut anyone on the special TEAM then I guess. Marv's hands are tied! What a conundrum!!

Did you ever think that it was the other guys on the special TEAM who got more than 3 tackles who actually made it a successful special TEAM, not the losers who had 3 tackles and just as many penalties???? The fact is Wire does the same thing on STs as he does playing safety - overruns plays, gets in bad position, makes stupid mistakes (jumps on piles to show his super awesome aggressiveness in stopping a stationary target). He is a liability plain and simple.

That's right cut Wire, Reed, Vincent, Anderson etc... they all suck. But lets make a guy who has never caught 50 passes our #1 receiver, let's make a cancerous jerk who has happy feet and the accuracy of a blind epileptic our starting QB, let's take a converted undrafted TE and let him anchor our offensive line. Hell and lets bring back Drew Haddad and make him our #2 because he has a porn stars mustashe.

That sounds like a very reasonable plan to me.

Sorry I forget the </sarcasm>

BTW, I forgot Laval Sape as our NT, Crowell, Hagan and Stamer are suck young up and comers they should be starting over Fletch who is old, and Spikes who is a cripple.

Jeez let's cut every decent backup or starter because they aren't in the probowl and replace them with our practice squad guys. I have heard that is the best way to win a super bowl. Because the starters and reserves really didn't deserve their spots, but the practice squad guys or players we cut (Haddad) are so much better then the guys we kept.

He's a must when it come to special teams. He's actually a pretty good backup Strong Safety. Remember he did start I think 2 years before Milloy came to Buffalo. Wire wasn't half bad.

Whatever.

I'm of the opinion that no one player on this squad is in the top 5 player in the League at their position. Frankly, I won't shed a tear if any - or all of them go, get cut, retire, resign or don't re-sign.

They're ALL Friggin expendable!

But, then again. That's JMHO.

Nice comment, you kiss your mother with that mouth? Keep your white hood at home where it belongs and get that crap out of my face. If you can't, shut up or go back to the pigly wiggly and get some pigs feet for the date with your sister.

He is a brutal safety and an arm tackling special teamer.  Cut him. Enough.  I want a new face and one who's eyes aren't squinting.

I guess you missed the game when he broke the collar bone of the starting RB (stwart?) for Detroit a couple years back? That hit was solid and I do not care what his eyes look like when you bring it like that.
