Taro T Posted March 8, 2006 Posted March 8, 2006 I wonder if we could have had a 1rst and 3rd from Edmonton for Marty. 621427 I have to believe that Darcy could have had that deal because Marty is much younger than Rollie and IMO a slightly better goalie. It appears that Darcy wants a player for Marty but would be willing to settle for draft picks for Mika. Maybe that deal was there for Mika until Mika lost 2 straight in Rochester. I really thought the Sabres could get Spacek out of Edmonton for Marty (not sure what draft picks would have been exchanged to even the trade), I guess not.
beerme1 Posted March 8, 2006 Author Posted March 8, 2006 At his price, there is no way I want Sundin. Can't really see much of a reason to trade Marty for a rental (McCabe) either. I'd rather get reasonable draft picks for him that will help Sabres long run than getting a rental that is suspect in his own end. I can see TO trying to get McKee next year, but IF he leaves Buffalo, wouldn't he want to go to a winner and not a team in salary cap h*ll? 621426 Actually next year they will be in very good shape cap wise. Certyainly not hell. But think about this for a minute, I find what you're saying reasonable and hard to believe at the same time. Draft picks? When WE have a legitimate shot at the cup this year? Rental or not, now is the time to go for it. This time may never come around again. And boy do I know that feeling I am amazed actually with the D this year. I thought for sure losing Alex would hurt this team badly. Losing McKee next year most certainly will hurt. Better to go for it right now imo because as I have previously stated, I don't see Jay coming back after the way Darcy has handled him. I wouldn't forget that, and I don't think he will either especially when the Leafs come calling sometime in June or July.

McCabe is a powerplay specialist and is suspect in his own end. The Sabres have one of the top powerplays in the league. I don't think that what McCabe would bring to the Sabres would be worth more to the Sabres than a #1 and #2 would be (especially when that #1 would likely be a lottery pick). I agree with you about the value of McKee and am very unhappy that the Sabres aren't currently trying to sign him. I also am not happy that Briere is UFA next year.

I guess Edmonton likes their defense.

Is that who you mean dave?

Alaska Darin Posted March 9, 2006 Posted March 9, 2006 Ok...not to get in the middle of IBTG81's LAMP about the Devils (because their fans crave attention because they really do not get much here in New Jersey, not saying that is right or wrong, but that is just the way it is).....To all fellow Sabres fans: Dismissing the Devils is a BIG mistake...very BIG mistake...Im sorry, but the reason I fear the Devils in the 1st round or even beyond that is: 1. Brodeur is back on his game...do not look at the overall numbers to determine his season...look at the last 2-3 months for a more accurate assessment. 2. Devils play disciplined hockey and stay out of the box, which will hurt the Sabres because the Sabres strengh is the Powerplay. 3. Devils have a lot of big game experience....something the Sabres do lack in a matchup versus New Jersey. Listen, Im REALLY fired up about the Sabres this year...what a great year this has been...but let's be realistic here for a second...this Sabres team collectively has proven nothing in the playoffs up to this point. 621012 It doesn't matter who you play in the playoffs - you have to beat four determined opponents to win the Stanley Cup. Jersey could very well be one of them. If we're going to see them, I'd rather it be in the first round than after their younger players have a chance to work out their jitters. Make no mistake, this is nowhere near the same Devils' team that has won in the past. They don't have Niedermeyer and Stevens to eat 30 minutes per game and every important shift down the stretch. While I'd say that Rafalski is as good as any Dman in the Eastern Conference, they drop off quite a bit after him. Their upfront depth is also woefully lacking after the Gomez/Gionta/Elias line. It's the only line that has any advantage over their Buffalo counterparts. If we pick up a quality top 4 defensemen and avoid injuries, I like our chances against anyone in the East.
