Mark Vader Posted March 2, 2006 Posted March 2, 2006 This weekend the Oscars will be rewarded to the movies of 2005. Once that is done, the remaining month of March unleashes a number of big name titles to get the Spring season off to a flying start, as a precursor to the upcoming summer season. Drawing the most interest this month, not from starpower, but from premise is "V for Vendetta". Based on the comic book, the story takes place in the future, where Germany has won a world war, and Great Britain is a fascist state. "V" is a masked freedom fighter using guerrilla warfare against the government forces. Hugo Weaving, Natalie Portman, and John Hurt star. Diego, Manfred & Sid are back in "Ice Age 2: The Meltdown". Not much is known plotwise about this movie, but that hardly matters to most fans, who will just be glad to see these familiar characters in a new adventure. Action is aplenty this month: "16 Blocks" stars Bruce Willis as a detective who mast take a fast talking witness(Mos Def) 16 Blocks to a courthouse. However someone is trying to prevent that from happening. Denzel Washington, Jodie Foster, and Clive Owen star in "Inside Man". A thriller that is being very quiet about being a film by Spike Lee. Washington is a cop who must stop bank robber Owen, who has taken hostages in his latest heist. "Ultraviolet" stars Milla Jovovich, in another female-ass-kicking-superhero movie. The big question is, will this film fall in the ranks of "Catwoman" & "Aeon Flux"? Chick Flicks are also in demand this month: "Failure to Launch" stars Sarah Jessica Parker, Matthew McConaughey, and Zooey Deschanel. Parents Terry Bradshaw & Kathy Bates hire Parker as the perfect girlfriend, to get their son(McConaughey), to finally move out of the house. Based on Shakespeare's "Twelfth Night", Amanda Bynes stars in "She's The Man". This teen romantic comedy follows the complicated world of intermingled love affairs at school. For the tween girls there is "Aquamarine". Before 2 best friends are about to be split up from moving, they meet a mermaid who has washed up from the ocean into their swimming pool. No joke. Looking for horror? Look no further: First there is the remake of "The Hills Have Eyes" as a family on a summer vacation is stalked by a group of psychotic people in the desert. "Stay Alive" follows a bunch of teams who become obsessed with playing a new video game. But what happens when the game starts to play them? An alien plague is turning everyone into zombies, mutants and slugs(?) in "Slither". Sharon Stone is back as Catherine Tramell in "Basic Instinct 2". Now she is causing all kinds of trouble in Britain. Johnny Depp is the Earl of Rochester, John Wilmot, in "The Libertine", John Malkcovich and Samantha Morton co-star. Tim Allen returns to Disney in the remake "The Shaggy Dog". Dave Chappelle brings his sketch and stand-up comedy to the big screen in "Block Party". "ATL" is about four african-american friends, who are trying to decide what to do with their lives now that high school is ending. R. Rich Posted March 3, 2006 Posted March 3, 2006 Great rundown, Mark. I saw the trailer for "Inside Man" back in December when I took my wife to see "Rent". I think it looks like a good one.

ajzepp Posted March 3, 2006 Posted March 3, 2006 This is one of the main reasons I love our little TBD community....there are so many huge fans of movies, many of whom actually have respectable taste

Mark Vader Posted March 4, 2006 Author Posted March 4, 2006 Great rundown, Mark. I saw the trailer for "Inside Man" back in December when I took my wife to see "Rent". I think it looks like a good one. 617017 Yes it does look like a good one. I find it interesting though that the trailer(s) make no mention of this movie being a Spike Lee film. Odd.

Fezmid Posted March 4, 2006 Posted March 4, 2006 UltraViolet I heard this movie was pretty bad. I wanted to see it as well, but we'll see what "real people" think of it.
CosmicBills Posted March 4, 2006 Posted March 4, 2006 You and me both....those flicks look awesome. 16 Blocks is gonna be intense. 617262 16 Blocks was a dissapointment. At times laugh out loud funny...only when it was trying to be serious though.
Mark Vader Posted March 4, 2006 Author Posted March 4, 2006 Indie movie watch. From now on I will try to post a few independant movies here and there. I do'nt have the time to post all of them, as there are so many released per month. But I shall have a preview of one or two a month that look to be the most interesting. Scheduled this month from Fox Searchlight is "Thank You For Smoking". A comedy following the life of Nick Naylor(Aaron Eckhart), a lobbyist for the tobacco industry. The ensemble cast includes: Maria Bello, Adam Brody, Sam Elliot, Katie Holmes, Rob Lowe, William H.Macy, and Robert Duvall. Scheduled for 3/17 Trailer: http://www2.foxsearchlight.com/thankyouforsmoking/teaser/
ajzepp Posted March 5, 2006 Posted March 5, 2006 16 Blocks was a dissapointment. At times laugh out loud funny...only when it was trying to be serious though. 618199 Well that sucks....I was really looking forward to that one.
Chilly Posted March 6, 2006 Posted March 6, 2006 I heard this movie was pretty bad. I wanted to see it as well, but we'll see what "real people" think of it. 618189 I saw it last night. UltraViolet was HORRIBLE. I can't even describe the level of suckyness that it had.
Fezmid Posted March 6, 2006 Posted March 6, 2006 I saw it last night. UltraViolet was HORRIBLE. I can't even describe the level of suckyness that it had. 618652 That's what I was afraid of. The commercial looked cool... CW
BigAL Posted March 6, 2006 Posted March 6, 2006 I heard this movie was pretty bad. I wanted to see it as well, but we'll see what "real people" think of it. 618189 I saw it this afternoon. Nowhere near as bad as the critics were saying. If you have seen Equilibrium by the same director, you'll probably like this movie. I would bet that if Quentin Tarinto produced or directed the exact same movie that was released, the critics woud be calling it amazing and revolutionary.

We all thought Ultraviolet was pure and utter garbage.
