Yes.

The "old" style e-tools were both a shovel and a pick, and could be used as a weapon.

The new ones are little spade looking things that weigh about a pound and fold out to about a 1 foot handle. Good for digging cat holes to poop in, but not much else.

The Collapsible Entrenching tool has it's origins as far back as Earth's 19th Century. It's purpose is simple, to allow the Marine to 'dig in', to either fortify his/her position with earth or trenches, or dig a hole (commonly known as a 'foxhole') to hide and protect him/herself, without carrying a bulky shovel.

This tool attaches easily to the side of a Marines Pack, and is carried by all riflemen, and some officers.

As a Secondary, and more deadly option, the entrenching tool it designed to be used as an impromptu battle axe (notice the serrated edges on the right side of the head, designed for this purpose).

It does shovel-type things, but is not a shovel. :D

So, it is a non-bulky shovel, shovel.
