what "character" guys is marv yapping about?

truth on hold

so why does marv keep jawing about need for players with character? bledsoe has tons of character and he was a big flop. losman and holcomb seem like decent guys too. moulds had one incident but you'd hardly call it a TO-McNabb thing. so bills have a high-character team and they cant win.

how about we get some guys that aren't choirboys but actually excel at their positions and win games?

Which incident was that? The one where he put his pregnant girlfriend's head through a wall?

Marv won with high character teams...character is not just off the field, but the lunch pail mentality of the Bills of the 90's. Marv will bring that back, and we will win....you just wait and see.

oh really? let's see, to name a few:

- jim kelly was known as a rebel and refused to play in buffalo until they coughed up huge gops of cash

- thurman thomas had an attitude and drinking problem, and openly feuded w/ kelly

- bruce smith was suspended 6 games for failing a drug test

- darryl talley got into a fight with magic johnson's bodyguard at a late night LA club the night before the super bowl

they were probably at the high end of "troubled team" scale. yet they did seem to do ok, that much i agree.

marv is just chasing ghosts here that dont exist. trying to address a problem with a solution not based on facts is a losing strategy.

confirms my greatest fear about marv's return: it's all about him, his hokey perspective on things and a misrepresentation of past and current bills teams

Again, high character guys does not refer to off the field issues! It deals with how they come to play. The Bills of the 90's under Marv came to play every week. Marv wants guys who want to play, not guys who want to rest on their laurels.

Yeah, except for the fact that he not only quit on his team, he crusaded against them. He loafed through practice, argued with his coaches, badmouthed management and backstabbed his teammates. Not to mention that he is too stupid to pick a GM that knows his ass from a hole in the ground.

So let's have Marv bring the Rosenhaus/Owens freakshow to Buffalo. Brilliant idea. There's a player in the tradition of Kelly, Lofton, Reed, and Thomas.

Ask yourself this, if Owens was on a team 32 points down at halftime with the backup QB and RB in the game, how would he react? Would he work his ass off to help the team come back, or would he be making an ass out of himself, screaming at every coach and QB he could get his hands on?

That's the type of character Levy is looking for. And Owens never had it and never will.

in my view, marv isn't talking about marcus vicks versus drew bledsoes. he's not talking criminals versus saints. he's talking about guys who are in the nfl for the right reasons. mike williams was in the nfl for the wrong reasons. the dude doesn't love the game and it's evident in the way he plays and the way he practices.

The one word I think everyone is missing here is "maturity." You find good players that are professionally mature, you're chances of success increase. Maturity means being accountable and responsible for yourself, your teammates and your coaches.

By the way....... the Bills teams of the 90s won exactly zero championships, so let's not say they "won" or were "winners." Maturity also means going to the Super Bowl to win it, not party and drink your face off.

Terrell Owens with your definition is one of the highest character guys in the league then. Next to Ray Lewis, of course.

owens played in the super bowl coming back early from a terrible leg injury. they had a chance to win the game and he was a factor. he's never had an off-field problem. thats character

Yeah, they really missed him in the playoffs leading up to the SB, right? :D

Of course, he took little time in trying to cash-in on that SB performance by trying to throw out the contract his signed after bitching and moaning his way out of SF and Baltimore.

The Eagles ultimately paid the price for his "character-ladden" performance when he showed up the front office, his coaches and QB in the following training camp.

I doubt that TO looked at the SB as a way to show his character, rather it was an audition for him and his jackass agent to renegotiate a contract that was less than a year old.
