Pyrite Gal Posted February 24, 2006 Posted February 24, 2006 I know folks are down on Mike Williams right now and they should be. His cut by the Bills was well deserved and he failed Bills fans, his teammates and himself as an athlete by playing so poorly that he did not deserve the contract he got with the #4 draft pick slot. That being said, even though he deserves our ridicule, it strikes me as more than reasonable for a team to sign him to a pretty good contract and attempt to get some value out him. Folks need to acknowledge (if they have any interest in reality though this is not a requirement actually of rabid fans) that MW was cut not simply because he was a bad player, but that actually he deserved to be cut by the Bills because his play did not justify the huge cap outlay we were providing for his contract. MW was a bust for us because he did not become and did not merit the pay of franchise LT and that is how we agreed to pay him. However, any team which signs him gets him free and clear without the encumberances of the pay mandated by his draft slot. Even the best guards in this league make multi-millions of $ a year. The vet minimum is in the hundreds of thousands a dollar per year. MW# does not deserve to be paid like the best paid G (much less a good pay for a tackle). Hpwever, even the pay given to an adequate tackle or guard can easily amount ot a couple a million per year. In addition, the salary cap is going up this season so there will be some money around for teams to invest and since many teams are looking to run and to stop the run, an OL investment is a good place to go. MW can sign a new deal which gives him a low salary and pro-rates a substantial bonus over the length of that contract or allowed in an uncapped year if there is no new CBA. He can easily sign for a contract which rewards him heavily for reaching the incentive of appearing in a number or starting a number of games and it would be quite reasonable. While no one likes being rejected, being cut should prove to be a great financial boon for MW. He already is a mult-muillionaire with the intial bonus he received from the Bills. He now will get free money he had not contracted for by signing a new contract with a team paying him another multi-million dollar bonus upfront. One can feel sorry for MW for getting rejected due to his failure as an athlete, but overall one should not feel sorry for him career wise in terms of compensation as this cut leaves him laughing all the way to the bank.
tennesseeboy Posted February 24, 2006 Posted February 24, 2006 Yeah..I think he can go somewhere at a drastically reduced salary. However his selection and his salary will be based on his performance in the NFL, not on his reputation at the University of Texas...and his performace in the NFL was not stellar, to say the least. He was a failure at tackle (I think everyone will agree with this). He was not a particularly good gaurd, and the reason I don't say he was a bad gaurd is his susceptibility to injuries which meant he didn't play a lot. I think most teams will think of signing him as "taking a flier" on the guy. I'm not too concerned that he will be in the Pro Bowl next year or anything like that...although stranger things have happened.
OnTheRocks Posted February 24, 2006 Posted February 24, 2006 i think the Bills should have legally been able keep him on their roster while not paying him one penny. just in case he eventually did develop into a stellar performer.
MadBuffaloDisease Posted February 24, 2006 Posted February 24, 2006 I figure at best he'll get a heavily incentive-laden contract that could pay him a ton if he reaches them. But no one will give him a boatload of money. Just look at LJ Shelton last year.
The Tomcat Posted February 24, 2006 Posted February 24, 2006 5 years 10 Million with a 5 mill signing bonus
Dawgg Posted February 24, 2006 Posted February 24, 2006 I still do not fogive you for insinuating that Mike Williams wasn't that far behind Bryant McKinnie in terms of performance... That is all I will say for now. I know folks are down on Mike Williams right now and they should be. #41 Posted February 24, 2006 Posted February 24, 2006 You meant nice new deal as in playing Professional Football? He might get a good deal to check id's @ Mickey Rat's this summer. Perhaps the casino needs a greeter, either him or Baby Joe.
JimBob2232 Posted February 24, 2006 Posted February 24, 2006 So..what you are saying is... -Lets keep mike williams, and lets allow him to eat up EVEN MORE of the cap than he would have before. BRILLIANT!
AJ1 Posted February 24, 2006 Posted February 24, 2006 Let's see your resume big Mike. Oh, you got cut by a team that has had one the worst offensive lines in league history. Let us line up to shower you with millions. I think not. Not that there aren't some crazy owners in the NFL, but if big Mike gets a job, it will be close to the league minimum.
Sisyphean Bills Posted February 24, 2006 Posted February 24, 2006 Hmm. What was the reason exactly? He'll get another shot because another team doesn't have to sign him to the contract TD did? OK. But, that's kind of funny actually. You're not saying he might be a good salvage project, only that his cap figure doesn't need to be exorbinant. MW has a couple of football related issues. -- He's never exactly been the model of fitness. -- He won't and can't play hurt. -- He lacks motivation. -- He doesn't even seem to like the game and seems like he'd rather be a standup comedian. -- His teammates didn't respect him for the above reasons. He'll get another shot someplace else because he is a huge guy and has some natural talent. But, I bet he'll be out of the NFL soon enough, leopards don't change their spots that often. Marv did the right thing by cutting the Bills losses and not paying Fat Mike his $3 million bonus and eating another $11 million in 2006 cap space on this mega-BUST draft pick.
SDS Posted February 24, 2006 Posted February 24, 2006 Do you know what the best thing about Mike Williams is?

Sisyphean Bills Posted February 24, 2006 Posted February 24, 2006 Do you know what the best thing about Mike Williams is? 610973[/snapback] He was the cornerstone LT of the dynasty that TD built in Buffalo. Oh, wait...

And if he isn't '"truly, intrinsically motivated" (ML) that means he doesn't have "football temperament", and that means he still can't play. I was never too sure about Big Mike. He moved too slowly. Imagine taking home $23 MILLION and being a slug!
ieatcrayonz Posted February 25, 2006 Posted February 25, 2006 Why is everyone giving this new poster such a hard time? I don't agree with her opinion but it seems she put a lot of hard work into it. Hey Pyrite can you post a picture of yourself in your profile?
