Wire K- Lindell P- Moorman 606690 It's difficult to tell which approach the Bills will take in free agency because it remains to be seen how much say Marv has. During Levy/Butler's tenure, the Bills seemed to focus on quality performing, self-motivated players and they paid well for them and got results. Paup, Washington, Jeffcoat, Spielman. As an example, in the Butler era, the Bills would have actively pursued Mike Wahle instead of shopping for bargains like Bennie Anderson. Donahoe had one offseason where he spent freely, but otherwise he has been shopping the bargain basement and replacing young expensive players like Jennings and Winfield, with older stop-gaps like Mike Gandy and Troy Vincent. I think his approach didn't bring in difference makers and he failed to identify ascending players in FA. Your approach seems to be trying to bring in underachievers with the talent to be differnce makers and hope to find the next Gerard Warren or Koren Robinson. That's OK in moderation, and it's something TD failed miserably at, but there doesn't appear to be any attempt to find self-motivated, core players in your approach. The Bills have actually had a significant talent drain in the past two offseasons, and IMO they need to bring in some high QUALITY proven talent on the O-line in order to advance their heavy investments in guys like Losman, Evans, McGahee, Parrish and Everett. Fonoti, Preston, Vallarial and Jon Scott = a wing and a prayer. If they have to pay thru the nose for it, so be it. Consider it money horded the past two offseasons. It may turn out that the Bills can't do enough in one offseason to be a wild-card contender, but if nothing else, they must find a way to open up the field for the talent in house and allow it to develop, and that's by bolstering the O-line first and foremost and then the D-line second, and everything else a very distant third. It's important to do that in free agency, because the draft should be about getting the best available players if at all possible. I guess, in short, my opinion is that sometimes you patch holes in free agency, but this time the Bills need to do more than that.
Bill from NYC Posted February 19, 2006 Posted February 19, 2006 I guess, in short, my opinion is that sometimes you patch holes in free agency, but this time the Bills need to do more than that. 606773 I agree, but I truthfully doubt that it will be possible to bring in enough free agents for the Bills to be a playoff team, unless Hutchinson somehow finds himself a UFA, and we can bring him in for OT money (remember our conversation about this at RWS? ) That said, I don't care that much, providing that we bring in some good blockers via the draft. Players such as Jean-Gilles and Setterstrom will be there for the taking. Imo, eith might out produce what we currently have in their rookie season, and get that much better in year 2. Marv is talking a good game. We shall see.
TC in St. Louis Posted February 19, 2006 Posted February 19, 2006 I really don't think the Bills are that far away from being a contender. Sign a free agent or two for the OL, get Everett back, new offense can't be anywhere near as ineffective as last year. Remember the Bills had the best "first drive of the game" offense in the league. After that, they were horrible. They just need to design a good offense around the talent they have. I hope they keep Moulds. The return of Spikes and the drafting of Ngata, and the return of Ron Edwards will help this defense get back near the top of the league. I don't care for the twin middle aged safety concept. They should go after a pass rush guy to complement Schobel. There is talent on this team. And I hope the new regime can draw the talent out.

Hell, all JP had to be was AS GOOD as Drew was (which sucked horribly) and we'd be at least 9-7 again. So much for that.
