Lothar Posted February 15, 2006 Posted February 15, 2006 Mine is Tony Greene, with Saimes a close second. I always thought Kazoo and Shultz sucked. 603747 I don't know about sucked but Schultzie "knew nothing"
SACKMARINO Posted February 15, 2006 Posted February 15, 2006 Remember what a hard hitter Kurt Schultz used to be. Not saying he was the greatest, but he was always good for one big hit per game. 603663 beat me to it. schulz was nasty!!!!
ajzepp Posted February 15, 2006 Posted February 15, 2006 Objectively, he was probably a bit overrated.....Subjectively, he's my favorite cause I met him in person and he's just a great guy....one Mr. Leonard Smith.
eball Posted February 15, 2006 Posted February 15, 2006 The greatest Bills' safety of all time was when Bruce tackled Hostetler in SB XXV. He still shoulda knocked the ball out, though...
Greybeard Posted February 15, 2006 Posted February 15, 2006 George Saimes was probably the best tackler the Bills have ever had. The guy was fearless. Always head first at the runners legs. Can't recall ever seeing the guy miss.
Tcali Posted February 16, 2006 Posted February 16, 2006 One of my very favorite all-time Bills.... 603884 Loved Freeman tooo...great anticipation, super smart, could read what the QB wanted to do...all this with mediocre speed...Loved watching him play...always the right place at the right time.
OnTheRocks Posted February 16, 2006 Posted February 16, 2006 Steve Freeman was my favorite but i don't know if he was the best.
truth on hold Posted February 16, 2006 Posted February 16, 2006 ..... Tony Greene. The guy dominated the secondary when the Bills had nothing on defense (unless of course you consider Walt Patalski something.) He had several multiple interception games. He was so good in fact it justified keeping his brother - Donnie Greene - on the team, even though he wasn't that good. 603630 tony greene, he seemed to be a factor in every game. and you didnt specify strong or free safety but it doesn't really matter because in my opinion the bills have never had a true standout at strong safety - jones was the most consistent, but in any given year he was not a standout. its too bad too because in my opinion its the most under rated position in football. it's why bellicheck went after rodney harrison and cut milloy. and would the bucs have won a super bowl without lynch? steelers without polamolu? and it makes sense when u consider the SS covers the tight end, rushes the passer, stops the run and, most importantly, is the enforcer in the secondary.
KOKBILLS Posted February 16, 2006 Posted February 16, 2006 Oh Henry! Henry Jones for me no question... When Shulzy was good, he was REAL good too...
Spiderweb Posted February 16, 2006 Posted February 16, 2006 Mine is Tony Greene, with Saimes a close second. I always thought Kazoo and Shultz sucked. 603747 While Tony Greene was a very good ball hawk, Saimes brought the whole package. Sorry, Greene was not a strong tackler. Saimes was very good, if not outstanding at it. For those who aren't aware, Saimes (along with Johnny Robinson) were voted the All-Time best Safeties in the AFL. All-Time AFL Team
tennesseeboy Posted February 16, 2006 Posted February 16, 2006 Some truly great football players and a lot of Buffalo Bills on the all time AFL team.
Beerball Posted February 16, 2006 Posted February 16, 2006 Didn't Bruce sack danny boy once for a safety? That would have to be my favorite.
Fixxxer Posted February 16, 2006 Posted February 16, 2006 Raion Hill, GW told me he played the game very similar to one Ronnie Lott.
Like A Mofo Posted February 16, 2006 Posted February 16, 2006 Speaking of Ray Bentley...Darby the Dinosaur books anyone? http://www.allbookstores.com/browse/Author/Bentley%2C%20Ray 603704 I have one of those autographed by Ray himself
plenzmd1 Posted February 16, 2006 Posted February 16, 2006 That's not a raise, that's a downgrade. Bill Simpson was on the downside of his career, and had 6 int in 1980, but the entire secondary led the league. Adv. Freeman. 603966 But Simpson had that interception in the Jets playoff game that preserved a win that would have gone down as one of the worst choke jobs in the NFL playoff history, just adding to the Bills great reputation. For that one pick, and one pick only, ole Billy Simpson is my favorite
tennesseeboy Posted February 16, 2006 Posted February 16, 2006 If you want one play I'd have to make that Hagood Clarke, who was a safety with Saimes. With a minute or less left and Houston holding the ball, Blanda decided to throw for a first down. Clarke intercepts, runs for a touchdown and the Bills continue to the Afl championship. Add Hagood Clarke to the mix.

BillsCelticsAngelsBama Posted February 18, 2006 Posted February 18, 2006 The best safety...my vote goes to Jeff Nixon out of Richmond. Career was shortened by a knee injury but he was excellent in the 1980 season, when we would have gone to the Super Bowl if Joe Ferguson doesn't sprain his ankle.
BenchBledsoe Posted February 18, 2006 Posted February 18, 2006 Although his career was cut short by injury, I love Jeff Nixon. To me, he's the safety equivalent to Jerry Butler, who to me, is by far the best WR the Bills ever had. I believe Nixon led the NFL in interceptions in one year in the 80's. Can someone confirm?
