Sherman turned down OC job offer w/ Bills

I hadn't heard that. Does anyone know if $$ had been the reason for his saying no? Or was it that he didn't want it because he lost out on the HC interview?

It is interesting how the title "Assit. Head Coach" has been floated around with more and more frequency.

Texans Expected to Hire Sherman --

Fri Feb 10, 2006 --from FFMastermind.com

The Houston Chronicle reports the Texans are expected to hire former Green Bay HC Mike Sherman as assistant head coach/offensive line, although the move may not become official before next week. Sherman has been on a family vacation and still must work out a contract, but he’s expected to report for work Monday. Even though he won three division titles and made the playoffs four times, Sherman was fired by the Packers after the season. He interviewed for head-coaching jobs with Buffalo and the New York Jets. He turned down offers to become the offensive coordinator of the Bills and Jets. Kubiak, who coached running backs at Texas A&M when Sherman coached the offensive line, made a convincing case for Sherman to join him in Houston. Coaches who have already signed with the Texans are Troy Calhoun (offensive coordinator/quarterbacks),

The Bills would have been smart to offer it to him, and Sherman would have been smart to reject it. I think he is still potentially a head coach and he can sit out one year if necessary. If things don't work out the OC might be the only option left, but it sounds like a pretty good decision on his part.

Sherman could have been the Bills' OC and then moved onto being a HC next year.  Dumb move on his part.

What if he had become OC and the offense still stunk? How would that help his HC hopes? He's better off being in a "lower profile" (positional + Assistant Head Coach) than taking the risk of taking a higher profile position of OC on a team trying to turn around an offense.

It just reaffirms that at least the front office tried to bring in quality assistants -- and had trouble getting anyone to bite. In the final analysis that may be why MM left.

Mularkey had it worse. He was clearly a marked man on a short leash, potentially on his last year. It's tough to make wholesale changes on the assistants with a complete lack of job security...Nobody wants to go somewhere for one year....

Not so dumb at all...he can sit back and likely make much more off the Packers, for doing nothing, and still be a HC candidate next year. What if it turns out that the Bills are just putrid again (maybe it isn't all the coaching?), Sherman's stock as a HC would go down....

Basically there are no guarantees.  He had some offers to be an OC, but turned them down for an OL/AHC post.  Considering the state of the Texans' O-line, he's making a HUGE mistake.  And sitting out doesn't help with HC'ing offers the following year.

May not help, but it likely wouldn't hurt either. There likely won't be as many HC positions opening up next season, as this off-season, but you know, wherever he is, Sherman will be a hot name. He is white, has a good w-l record, and fans of teams looking for HC's (at least on TSW) seem to buy easily the idea that he is the second coming of Vince Lombardi!

Being an OC certainly hasn't helped Jim Fassell, who one might argue was on the same level as Sherman. Fassell was HC of a team of scrubs, that lost a Super Bowl....

Like you said, there likely won't be many HC'ing jobs next year. And all those things you said about him were true THIS past season, and there were 9 other HC'ing jobs open for which he didn't get a single offer, so I don't see why teams would think they're necessarily more desirable NEXT year, again with fewer teams.

Exactly my point. Even as an OC, Fassel can't find a HC'ing gig. Taking an OL/AHC position on a team with a LOUSY O-line that likely won't get better quickly, he's setting himself up for not seeing a HC'ing gig for awhile.
