I'll be in Las Vegas for the first time in late April. I'm there for a convention. I could use some advice on stuff to do. Here are some details:

> I'm staying at the Gold Coast. It's off-strip but I'm saving a boatload on lodging. I hear it's okay for the money. Anyone know how far it is to the Las Vegas Conv.Ctr? Any idea about public transportation? Isn't there train that runs along the strip? Does it go to the CC?

> Any suggestions on poker tourneys? Nothing too rich.

> It will be ECHL playoff time, and I'm hoping the LV Wranglers are still playing. Anyone ever go to a game? Is there also an AAA baseball team in Vegas?

> Lastly, any must-see must-do suggestions for a first-timer?

As for poker tourneys, there are so many going on now there really isnt one particular place that I could say 'its a must'...there are tourneys...$100 NL $200 NL tables all over the place...

There is a AAA team there called the Las Vegas 51's...not sure about schedule etc...

Las Vegas recently opened a new monorail system and its solid...I think its $3 a ride or something....

When not at the convention, leave your star trek outfit back in your hotel room.

I would suggest if you plan to really try and win money gambling, try one of the off strip type places, the ones most tourists don't go to. Check places like the Reserve, most locals go to places like that...

Two suggestions that are not that expensive.

Drinks and a stogie on the terrace at MIX, the restaurant at the Hotel at Mandaly right around sunset. Up like 30 stories, great views of the sunset, then awesome view of the whole lit up strip!!! Wear proper dress, drinks a little pricey, round $12 for a martini, but very cool, and lots o talent coming in round 9.30.

Next drink spot is the terrace at Bellagio at night. Wait for a table outside, have a few pops, and watch the fountains, very cool.

If you are a craps player, as someone mentioned, hit some of the off strip places. 10X odds, even 100X at some places, as opposed to 3X (if your lucky) at most strip casinos.Downtown is cool for thesew types of places, but pretty expensive cab ride there and back.

And stay away from Kraft Steak in the MGM, worst dining experience of my life.

BTW, i was not aware of a LV Convention center. Most of the bigger hotels have gigundus convention space, so I imagine it is at one of those.

The LVCC is on Paradise. It's the National Association of Broadcasters Convention, although it does get it's share of nerdy engineers with pocket protectors and tape on their glasses.

Someone mentioned the pool at the Hard Rock. Obviously you mean to look. I'm sure use of the pool is reserved for guests.

I'm starting to think I will get a car, but I may not get one at the airport. It looks like most of the big hotels have rental car offices, so I'll get a car when I need one. What the parking/traffic situation in Vegas like?

Lastly, I love a good meal (at a cheap price, even better! Notice a trend here?) Any suggestions there?

If you use a car, use valet parking at the strip casinos. Free , no long walk,.Tip the guy $2 when your car comes. Also avoid driving up the strip. Use the parallel roads. My cousin works at NYNY and says ther are always accidents at the Bellagio because of the tourists trying to pull over (which is illegal) to stop and watch the fountains.

Go to the Star Trek area of the LV Hilton. The restaurantunt there is Star Trek themed with the bartender dressed as a Ferengi and you may see a Klingon walking around. If you drink the Warp Core Breach, don't drive after (it says so on the menu!).

Pay attention to the handouts you receive on every corner.

Just remember though, it's NOT legal in Clark County! You must go to the nearby county if you wish to avoid prosecution.

The advice to go off the strip to gamble is good. Take it.

BUT, if you really want to get the feel of Vegas Strip gambling at it's traditional best, IMO...go play craps at the Mirage at about 3am. They pump that sucker full of oxygen and the place just buzzes with excitement.

BTW, all you Vegas pros. How's the Rio these days? That place was always full of talent. I never stayed there (seemed kind of second-tier), but would usually spend at least a couple hours there scoping the scene. I wonder it the Hard Rock stole their cachet.

Can't help you with specifics, since I haven't been myself, but here's part of a webpage I bookmarked for when I do go....

I would really shy away from getting a car. Cabs, or the monorail do ya fine, unless you reaqlly want to go to downtown.

Good info on the CC, like i said i didn't think there was one.

In terms of cheap meals, lots of them in Vegas. Just look around when you get there.
