R. Rich Posted September 24, 2004 Posted September 24, 2004 Rick Rude, now that cat was hysterical.Man they used to have some talented individuals who could just get you chuckling by handing them a mike for 30 seconds. Things got too wierd for me when they brought in the Cindy Lauper's and Mr T's and the whole shebang became a bodybuilding and hairstyling contest. Hilarious performers like Roddy Piper and Bobby Heenan (comic genius' both) would have never seen the light of day in today's wrestling world. The only thing close I know of is that Mick Foley guy who I saw an A&E Biography about; they just don't make 'em like that anymore:-( Cya P.S. About 10 years ago somebody made me watch a tape of some wrestling from NYC called ECW. I don't know if they've been kicked off the air yet but they were sure headed that way. It kinded of reminded me of the old days with the lower production values, some outrageously funny wrestling (tables/chairs/balconies/fire/etc), mentally unstable characters and some pipsqueak Gordon Solie type announcer with a greaaaat voice who could really sling it. I was waiting for George Steele to coming running out at any second!-) 44204[/snapback] Rude is my all-time favorite wrestler. With the exception of Ric Flair, nobody could talk smack like he could. The Rock was close, but still not as good as Rude. I agree about wrestling being ruined, but not by Lauper or Mr T. To me, it was ruined by the lack of competition for McMahon's WWF, which allowed him to turn pro wrestling from a fun, soap opera-ish show with colorful characters, to a testament to cursing and showing as much T&A as possible. Back when it was more cartoonish, I could watch it with my 6 year old niece, who loved it. Now, even I don't want to watch that crap. Mick Foley was a self-created superstar; a guy who made it in spite of his shortcomings. You gotta respect that. Though I do feel sorry for his family. He seemed to 'get it' in that documentary when he saw how his family reacted to seeing him being blasted in the head with a steel chair by The Rock. He mentioned that he wouldn't put them through that again. But, he just can't stay away. I really hope he doesn't end up an invalid or something. ECW was filled with good talent waiting for their big break (RVD, Tazz, Stone Cold, etc.), but the way Paul Heyman ran that company is much like the way McMahon runs the WWF (or WWE) today. Trashy.
Simon Posted September 24, 2004 Posted September 24, 2004 Yeah that ECW thing definitely had its porn element and I wouldn't have let my kids watch it. But I've always had a weakness for trashy chicks from the worng side of the tracks in their underwear, so it didn't bother me too much;-) As for today, I won't even let my 8yrold watch primetime wrestling now; it's just not funny anymore and he's creatively destructive enough as it is. I didn't even mean to watch the Foley documentary. The TV was just tuned to A&E when it came on and within 5 minutes I found myself unable to turn away. It was really compelling TV. When that sumbitch jumped off the top of that cage, and then accidentally went through the cage 20minutes later, even the guys in the show were blown away. And spooking guys who do that shlt for a living is no easy trick. My favorite part was when Foley told his opponent after the match that he couldn't remember whether or not he had ended up using the tacks he'd brought to ringside. Meanwhile he's sitting right there looking like a pincushion with about 50 tacks sticking out all over him! That's just good comedy;-)

The documentary I referred to was a movie about pro wrestling and one of the segments had Foley at home watching a tape of his wife and daughter watching one of his matches. He saw just how horrified they were at what he went through. That was a pretty good movie; the segment about Jake Roberts was especially good. Depressing, but good. I can't remember the name of it, but I know I did rent it a while ago.
Simon Posted September 24, 2004 Posted September 24, 2004 Yeah, it was the A&E Biography I think. I didn't see the thing about Jake Roberts. Frankly, I'm sort of surprised that guy is still alive. I got the distinct impression he wasn't wrapped too tight (and I don't just mean his snakeguy character) and he struck me like another one of those guys who was going to go out early and ugly. Cya P.S. You clean out your PM inbox yet?

Yeah, I have begun cleaning out the PMs. I'm still working on it, but there's enough room to send/receive messages now.
