I thought he was in. It looked like he got the nose of the ball across the plain when he was in the air and he was pushed back when he was tackled.

It was close though, I think the replay was inconclusive so the ref had to go with what was called on the field.

To BR's credit, his knees aren't down in the pic... The ball is still out and PARALLEL to the plane...

When he did get his knees down, the ball was still in the same position tucked under him though.

I would like to see a later shot when his knees went down... That evidence would be damning.

This picture still doesn't prove it.

That is why you don't make the call on the field and go right to the booth.

The burden of proof should not be on any team.

1 elbow = 2 knees.

Is that how it works Joe? Can we get a verification on this.

Does 1 elbow make him down?

Then damn... He was out.

Same thing I have been saying all along. I saw the ball parallel to the line and tucked under him... I am afraid his glove looked like part of the ball!

Looks like we need to have another rules clinic. NFL defines a player being down, as any part of the body touching the ground, other than a hand or foot. Thus, with Ben's forearm plainly planted in the turf, and ball clearly sitting outside the plane of the goal line it is not a TD on that shot.

But, the travesty of the call is the side judge's ruling. If you were going to give him credit forthe TD, it would be on the initial jump, where you can argue that the ball broke the plane of the GL in the split second before the Hawk defender pushed his arm back. But, that was also the time where the side judge ran forward indicating 4th down, but then raised both hands to show TD after seeing Ben move the ball past the GL. That doesn't make sense, because the ball movement happened after Ben was down.

I would have much less issue with the call, if the judge called a TD immediately, and not after signaling 4th down.

Anything but the hand on the ground after contact and your down.

But, I thought the replays just did not show conclusively that the ball did NOT cross the plane while he was in the air, therefor the call on the field HAD to stand

i think the tip of the ball crossed the plain of the goal line. if it had been ruled no TD on the play, the replay would not not have changed the call to a "Good TD".

as it was it was called a TD and there wasn't enough to change it a "No-TD" call.

I wish everyone could accept that it was simply a very close play.

Which call? The one where the ref ran in and called it down, or following that when he called it a TD?

I agree... Then it had to stand. That is why they shouldn't call it on the field in this case... The burden should be on nobody.

The could of easily called it out (which he first did) and that play would have stood also.

The ref will usually explain after the review... In this case he just said: "The play is a touchdown" and walked away... What gives?

I can live with just calling it in the booth and not knowing who the "burden" is on... That seems unfair.

Just a shame.

Out. Horrible call... probably would've went for it & scored on 4th down, though.

Horrible call!!! I watched it 17 times in super super super slow motion, and once I digitally increased the size of the picture and digitally removed parts of Roethlisberger and the defender so I could see the ball, it was clearly obvious that he was 0.2336 inches short of the chalk. I don't understand how a ref could blow that call on a high speed collision at the goalline while determining forward progress, where the ball is, and whether or not the runner is down, all in front of 500 million people. Idiot!!!

I think I am one of the few that can. It just seems very unfair to one team when they make a call like this on the field first.

I think we can all live with a ruling made by the booth without a ruling on the field better than how the calls are handled now.

Just my opinion for the 10,000,000th time... God, I am glad I am home today... Stuff like this would get me fired!:lol:0:)

I don't think anyone's blaming the ref for making the call -- that's a tough one to make. But the replay clearly showed he was out. Maybe it's because I was watching on the big screen in HD, but there was no doubt he was down before the ball went in.

I think clearly there was some doubt.

It was stated earlier, that replay was no help at all. If no TD was the call, it stands. Since TD was called on the field, there didn't seem to be enough to overturn it. Not to get into a pissing contest here, but I was also watching on a flat screen in HD, and while personally I thought he didn't get in, I couldn't say I saw for sure that he didn't.

Oh... I am blaming the ref!

He should have just threw his hands down and pointed to the booth... Gesturing: "You make the call."
