With Oscar nominations announced most studios will be expanding their Best picture, actor, & actress films this month. Still there will be new stuff as well.

Traditionally February is when we get a good helping of romantic-comedy/drama films, thanks to Valentine's Day. Oddly enough only 2 films fit that category this month, and one of them, "Date Movie", is a satirical parody. So this February we have a wide variety of films that will appeal to many different viewers.

Harrison Ford is back in the action-thriller "Firewall". It's been 3 years since we last saw the fomer Han Solo/Indiana Jones, on the big screen, and that was in 2003's "Hollywood Homicide". Fans of Ford will be glad to see him again, and in a type of movie that they enjoy watching him in.

Ford plays a security specialist, who must break into and rob the bank he works for so that he can pay the ransom of his kidnapped family. Virginia Madsen and Paul Bettany co-star. While the movie does play to Ford's strengths, the lack of a big name actor for a villain, and an unexciting movie title, will more likely mean word of mouth will have to carry it for big box office numbers.

For those who are sick of Valentine's Day, and all of it's sappy, pretentious romantic comedies, get ready for "Date Movie". From 2 of the 6 writers of "Scary Movie", the same formula is used in this film spoofing many recent romantic based comedies and dramas. Alyson Hannigan & Eddie Griffin star.

There are thrillers aplenty this month also:

Samuel L. Jackson, Julianne Moore, & Edie Falco star in the crime-drama-suspense film "Freedomland". Moore plays a mother who's son is kidnapped. When she blames an African-American man for it, racial tension in the city ignites. Jackson plays a detective to find the boy, and finds himself getting involved in a much bigger mystery.

"Final Destination 3" continues the premonition thriller franchise, this time centering around a local amusement park.

"When A Stranger Calls" a remake of the 1979 thriller of the same name, centers around a young girl who while babysitting one night, is constantly harrassed by a prank caller, asking her about the kids in the house.

Steve Martin is back in the long delayed-pushed back comedy "The Pink Panther". Martin is the bumbling Inspector Clouseau, who is assigned to solve the murder of a famous soccer coach and retrieve the pink panther diamond. Kevin Kline and Jean Reno co-star.

Family films will be out in full force as well:

First there is the traditionally 2-D animated "Curious George". Based on the famous series of children's books, the movie follows the adventures of a curious monkey named George, who is adopted by a man with a yellow hat, and then brought to America. If this film does good, could 2-D animation make a comeback?

Will Ferrel, Drew Barrymore, & Eugene Levy are among the voice talents.

Paul Walker, Jason Biggs, & Bruce Greenwood star in "Eight Below". Based on a true story, this film follows two explorers in Antarctica who must abandon their team of sled dogs after an accident. The 8 dogs must then learn to survive when a huge storm hits.

"Doogal" is a dog who must lead a bunch of animal companions to find three magic diamonds to end the impending ice age, brought on by an evil sorceror. This 3-D animated film comes from the U.K. studio, Pathe.

We get Paul Walker a second time this month in "Running Scared". Walker plays a mob flunkie who is hired to dispose of "hot" guns from mob killings.

Tyler Perry follows up his hit film "Diary of a Mad Black Woman" with, "Madea's Family Reunion". The title pretty much speaks for itself.

"Something New" stars Sanaa Lathan and Simon Baker, in the other romantic comedy that comes out this year.

Independent movie watch:

I normally do not post info on any of the indie films but I did want to point out this film.

"Night Watch" from Russia, a big budget first film of a trilogy on the forces of good and evil, was a major hit in 2005 in Russia, and will be coming to the USA in limited release on 2/17.

Looks quite good.

Enjoy all. See you next month.

I don't think I'll be able to watch Firewall. I can't imagine that they'll get any of the technology right, and I'll just be rolling my eyes throughout the whole thing.

I cant picture Jason Biggs in any other role than Jim, from American Pie. Everytime you see him, you think of him !@#$ing that pie.

Went and saw this tonight. While it is a good family movie, ie no swearing, sex references, etc, if you take young children that have a fear of abandonment, or problems dealing with a pets death, you may want to choose something else.
