It all starts

I have been reading most of the posts recently and have a few comments. People are asking if JP will be any good and if we should keep Moulds. People we will NEVER be any good until we have an offensive line that can run block. An offensive line that can dictate the game will ensure the qb and wr's will have good seasons. Someone wanted to compare the P-burgh wr's with ours. There is no comparison because the Steelers have an o-line that can block for the rbs-Parker and Bettis- to do their thing. That opens up the passing game. We are a cold weather team. We MUST have an o-line to run block. After that everything will fall into place. Look at Marv's Super Bowl runs. No team has EVER won the Super Bowl without an o-line that can run block effectively. As I keep saying if the Ravens can win a Super Bowl with Trent Dilfer at the qb spot--anyone can win if your o-line can establish the run.

It all starts with the o-line.

Good post, these are similar points that myself and others have been posting for quite awhile.

One thing about Trent Dilfer though, he is the exception, not the rule IMO. The 2000 Baltimore defense will probably go down, if not already, as one of the most dominant defenses of ALL TIME...not many defenses better then that bunch.

More often then not, to win a SB you need to have your QB do more then manage the game, more often you need to make sure your QB can MAKE the big plays at crucial situations during a game and STAY AWAY from critical mistakes as much as possible (see Jake Plummer as an example of a guy who cannot shake that).

Welcome to that ever growing, we need and O-Line club. Do not let those who on occasion try to argue that we need to draft or bring in a QB or one of those "skilled" player types....As you seem to already know, it all starts UP FRONT!

And that is the reason why the Ravens won only one SB....For a team to dominate a era or period of time, you have to be balanced on both offense and defense

and play excellent special teams.....Denver, Green Bay, New England, Pittsburgh all can keep going back deep into the playoffs because of the balance...

Yep, you said it. The line on Marv's teams was just good enough to win 0 championships, get their QB knocked out of 2 of the 4 games, and produce only one 100 yard rusher (Thurman in XXV).

Well, that and you have to have very good coaching, hope these players mesh together as if by magic, run an offense that utilizes their strengths and hides their weaknesses, hope to God only a couple of them get hurt and not your best ones, have skill players that use their skills on the plays that these linemen actually do their jobs, hope the refs don't call bad penalties on good plays too often, pray to God the defensive coordinator against you doesn't just happen to call the one defensive alignment that kills your blocking scheme more than a couple times a game, or is simply light years ahead of you in their coaching and game-calling skills, and hope the ball bounces your way. Other than that, it's all about the O Line.

See Plummer's vaunted offensive line crumbling under the Pittsburgh defense. See his run game disappear. See him force throws to try and save the day. Sound familiar?

Pittsburgh has been airing it out lately, but make no mistake that their success is predicated on great defense and then a great running game, ushered through by a line that can do it all.

You forgot one. Have the #4 draft pick when Jonathan Ogden is the best tackle in the draft, and not Mike Williams.
