jester43 Posted February 2, 2006 Posted February 2, 2006 a colleague quizzed me the following question this morning: was there ever a super bowl played with the goal posts in the front of the end zone? frankly i don't remember. my earliest super bowl memory (of actually watching the game, i mean) was the colts-cowboys game in 1971. i think the posts were in the back that year. but i also remember- and hopefully someone can verify this- that for a brief window of time, extending up to maybe 1971 or 72, teams had the OPTION of placing their goalposts in the front OR the back. my colleague says this is not true, that goal posts were moved to the back of all NFL endzones prior to the first super bowl. i am almost certain i remember watching the bills play the boston patriots when the posts were in the front. this could not have been before 1970, or MAYBE '69, because i was too young to understand or remember before that. but the first super bowl was in january of 67 so unless my memory is off i would have to be right. anyone remember the same as me on this??
Beerball Posted February 2, 2006 Posted February 2, 2006 I believe that the goalposts were moved back in the mid seventies. (prior to the 50's they were on the end line--just like today)
