2003 Posted January 26, 2006 Posted January 26, 2006 Excerpt from Buffalo News: http://www.buffalonews.com/editorial/20060126/1059547.asp Meanwhile, the Bills are wooing an experienced hand in Bates. Buffalo is the last team in the league without a defensive coordinator. Bates, 59, got good reviews for his work with a depleted Green Bay defense this year. The Packers ranked seventh in yards allowed. The previous year they were 25th. Bates was defensive coordinator for Dave Wannstedt in Miami from 2000 to 2004. He was interim head coach for the Dolphins late in 2004 after Wannstedt stepped down. Bates also has worked in the NFL for Cleveland, Atlanta and Dallas. From Billsdaily:http://www.billsdaily.com/news/index.shtml#012606 Bates Offer? League sources have told the Buffalo News that the Bills have offered their defensive coordinator's job to Jim Bates. He most recently held that post in Green Bay and was the interim head coach in Miami last year. If he comes to Buffalo it will be a bit of irony. Many thought an advantage to hiring Mike Sherman would be that he would bring Bates to Buffalo with him. The report says the Bills are waiting to hear if he will accept the offer, he is a hot commodity around the league at this time. (Check ouy my sig )

udonkey Posted January 26, 2006 Posted January 26, 2006 Once you think about sitting on the sofa, you already have.
loadofmularkey Posted January 26, 2006 Posted January 26, 2006 The Bills and Jets I believe, are the only two teams without DCs right now. So how hot of a commodity can he be??
2003Contenders Posted January 26, 2006 Posted January 26, 2006 I wonder how close he and Sherman are? Is it possible that during his deliberation he gave Sherman and call to get his take on the situation? If that is the case, you'd expect that the feedback he got wasn't good. Either... 1. Sherman has sour grapes for not getting the job and tells Bates how much the opportunity would suck. Or... 2. Sherman turned down the Bills job -- and he emphasizes his reasons for having done so, letting Bates know how much the opportunity would suck.

dave mcbride Posted January 26, 2006 Posted January 26, 2006 Maybe the Raiders too? 584896[/snapback] http://www.houstontexans.com/team/coaches.php the texans do not have a defensive coordinator.
MadBuffaloDisease Posted January 26, 2006 Posted January 26, 2006 Houston will be using 2 coaches to be the DC. Strange, but true. So they're out of the running. And the Raiders re-upped Ryan to be their DC. So that leaves the Bills and I thought the Jets, but I guess they have someone.
