that was followed up with a 4-12 season.

What were the reasons behind a 9 win drop off?  What were the amount of injuries?

- Horrible offensive playcalling (John Shoop)

- Deer in the headlights HC (Dick Jauron)

- Poor training camp (light contact, meeting heavy)

- Inadequate QB play

- Injuries to Ted Washington and Warrick Holdman

The talent level between the 2001 and 2002 teams was not discernibly different, the Bears just played a first place schedule and were outplayed and outcoached in every game. They lost a lot of players during the season but the team was already in the crapper before the injuries took their toll. Hell, they were even outcoached by Gregg Williams! Two of their four victories were due to Marty Mornhingweg inexpicably giving the Bears the ball first in OT and a Wayne Chrebet OT fumble at the 5 yard line which gave the Bears a win. They really should have finished 2-14.

Jauron was resolute in standing by John Shoop and he was at war with the GM. Not good times...

It's largely irrelevant, I suppose; but, ex-Bears head coaches have not exactly been stellar in their new appointments.

- Ditka tanked in New Orleans.

- Wannstedt bombed in Miami.

- Jauron ???? in Buffalo.

It does appear that the Lions at least gave Jauron an interview. Interestingly, some of the players on the Lions implied that Jauron and Mooch were just not right for a young football team that didn't need a coddling approach but to be forced to do their jobs the right way.
